The Graphic, Saturday, March 13th, 1915

ONE OF THE GERMANS' KNAVIS TRICKS
OUR MEN SURPRISED BY THE ENEMY DRESSED AS BRITISH TROOPS.

This incident took place near Zonnebeke, in Flanders, and is thus described by Private T. Horton, of the Staffordshire Regiment: “The Germans occupied a small village about a mile from our trenches. We were told off as an advance guard to the bridge, and entered the village, which was littered with dead, ammunition boxes, etc. On reaching the end of the street, the leading men of our party saw in front of them some seventy men dressed in khaki, and, naturally, taking them for English, shouted to us to hurry as we were reinforcing them. They immediately turned round and poured hot fire into us, which played havoc among our men.”

NEW YEAR'S DAY WITH A SCOTTISH REGIMENT AT THE FRONT.

"The scene on New Year's Day in the billets of a Highland regiment is thus described by Mr. Philip Gibbs : " I heard the pipes to-day in one old barn, where a feast was on, not far from where the guns were shooting, and though I had had one good meal, I had to eat another, even to the Christmas plum-pudding, just to show there was no ill-feeling." The scene took place beneath high old beams which had grown in French forests five centuries ago. There was sword-dancing by kilted men as nimble as Nijinski, and old songs of Scotland, which were blown down the wind of France".
