Veterans Metal Detecting Club
After hibernating since Covid, we are relaunching our Veterans Metal detecting Club. It will also include Magnet fishing and a few other things will be introduced later on.
If you are interested in getting involved, come along for an informal chat on Sat 31st October at 11.00
If you have metal detector, or magnet, please bring it along. The kettle is on. The only stipulation for now is that you must be a veteran, or a volunteer at Military Museum Scotland.
The idea of the meeting is to plan a few days away, detecting and fishing, getting dates in the diary. If you are keen to get involved and don't have any kit, come along anyway.

As of tomorrow, 11th of Oct, Military Museum Scotland will be moving to our winter hours, that means we are only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10.00-16.00 with last entry at 14.30. Slightly earlier in the year, but we have lots of plans to change things around, both inside and out, so we need to start now. Lots of exciting new things to come.
Throughout the week though, we will still be available for group bookings, the Veterans Friday Club will continue every Friday, The West Lothian Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club will still continue on the last Sunday of every month, then followed by our veterans model group.
All our volunteers will still hopefully continue to come in on their normal days as there is lots to do.

A shout out to all you world travellers and holiday makers! When we travel abroad, 9 times out of 10 we return with a pocketful of coins from the country we have just left, or a few notes thats not worthwhile exchanging them back. How many of you out there have a pile of foreign coins/currency tucked away in a drawer or cupboard and don't know what to do with them.
As a charity, Military Museum Scotland would gladly take them of your hands. No matter what the country they are from, or whether the currency no longer exists (Marks, Pesetas etc), we will take them and we can exchange them into sterling so that can really help Military Museum Scotland. Its not just foreign coins, we can also now take old pre decimal coins. There is now a collection box at the museum for any coins or notes that you want rid off.

Damian Doran Timson's idea to use his winning bid to help raise funds, gave me an idea. The Demi John was hand painted by the very talented veteran and artist, Duncan (Hank) Espin. Over the years, Hank has created some fantastic work for us. Recently he painted 4 Demi Johns. We have decided to keep the rest. (See pic).
The plan, for all the jars including Damians, will be to raise funds.
All the jars will be out hopefully collecting small change from anyone and everyone.
Four jars, Army, Navy, RAF & Morag's. When they are full the contents will be counted and 50% of 3 jars will come to the museum, the other 50% of each jar will go to an Army, Navy and RAF charity. The 4th jar, Morag's, 100% will stay in Military Museum Scotland, one of Morag's favourite charities. Over the years, Morag raised £1000s for the museum,and we will continue to raise funds in Morag's name.

At our Annual Military Gathering in August, we held a wee auction to raise some funds for the museum, the lots were a number of items produced by some of our volunteers. One of the items (see pic), went to the highest bidder, Cllr Damian Doran Timson with a winning bid of £40. Fantastic. When he picked up his lot, he asked to leave it in the museum, for people to put in their loose change to raise more funds for Military Museum Scotland. A very generous gesture.
Damian (RAF Veteran) has always been a great supporter of Military Museum Scotland since day one. Right away he realised the importance of the museum and work we do to help and support veterans. Damian as well as being our local councillor, is also the WLC Veterans Champion now and the first one to ever visit the museum in 10 years. He has been a great help to Military Museum Scotland over-the years and I am sure that will continue.
Thanks Damian for all that you do for Military Museum Scotland.

What a great end to September and a great start to October. To day we hosted some fantastic veterans and staff from Erskine. Over the past few weeks, we have hosted veterans from the Black Watch Association, with a couple of Argylls too, the SAS RBL Branch, and a couple of visits from Veterans at Erskine Edinburgh. Amazing days out for veterans of all ages, giving them a great reminiscence experience. Its also a great opportunity for our veteran volunteers the opportunity to reconnect with fellow veterans and for our "civvy" volunteers the chance to interact with veterans from many generations. A win win for everyone. The unique environment of Military Museum Scotland makes a huge impact on veterans with social and mental health issues. It's a safe and friendly environment for Veterans to be veterans amongst other veterans. The banter is second to none, whats said in the museum stays in the museum.
We have a few more veterans groups booked in for the rest of the year, so we plan to end 2026 on a high, despite losing some amazing friends this year.

The Sarge is back in town!
One day only, Saturday 24th of October from 10.30-14.30 ish. this will be the last time this year that the sarge will empty his store.
Who knows what will be on offer? Only the Sarge knows. He did hint that there will be a large number of model kits that dint sell at our recent auction, there will also be a bit of Brewerania. Do you need combats?, a Bergan? Maybe even NBC suits, who knows, the may come in handy sometime in the future. (I hope not).
Loads of bargains to be had. As usual, nothing has a price tag, it's all about negotiation. If you make me an offer and I think its not enough, we will keep going until we agree a price. On the other-side, if I think your offer too much, I will say so and we negotiate down.
Every penny will go towards keeping Military Museum Scotland open.

Help us share Scotlands military heritage.
We invite businesses, organisations and individual supporters to help produce our new guidebook. Your support will help us to tell the stories behind the collection and create a publication that visitors can take home and return to after their visit.
The planned guidebook.
The proposed edition is an A5 portrait booklet with 52 pages, including covers. Planned subjects include First and Second World Wars, the Home Front, Scottish military history, outdoor displays, restoration projects and the people behind the museum.
You can choose a guidebook sponsorship package or an advertising space to suit your organisation. In return, we offer an agreed place for your name, logo or advert alongside the museums stories, with clear recognition of your contribution.
