The C&C Viewing Room is open this week (Wed to Sat) showcasing work by glass artist Stewart Hearn and painter, Lorraine Bewick.

Stewart's preoccupation with the essential properties of glass; using weight, clarity, surface manipulation and the heat from the furnace exemplify his years of glassmaking and focus. The works included in this new exhibition combine and encourage optical and physical distortion in his forms.

Set alongside his glass are paintings by Sandringham based painter Lorraine Bewick. Using aerial viewpoints of the Norfolk coastline, and The Wash in particular, has given her the opportunity to play with pattern and shapes made by tidal flow and erosion. Lorraine strives to capture that notion of constant change. She treads a path mapped out by acknowledged masters of the genre, such as John Robert Cozens and JMW Turner

Huge thanks to all who joined us yesterday for the Private View of our fourteenth Viewing Room showcasing work by glass blower Stewart Hearn and painter, Lorraine Bewick.

Our perception of light and colour lies at the heart of both artists work. Stewart's blown glass works refract and cast coloured light around the room while Lorraine Bewick's paintings capture the liminal space between expansive skies and watery coastal landscapes surrounding us. Lorraine Bewick is interested in the shifting boundaries between sky, land and sea, while Stewart Hearn combines traditional glassmaking techniques with a contemporary approach to his glass creations.

You are very welcome to visit our latest exhibition of Victoria Fenn's striking and beautiful sculptures currently showcased alongside paintings by Molly Thomson. It closes at 2pm this coming Saturday 26 September.

The simple forms of Victoria Fenn's work reflect the language of the landscape, the parallel lines of field structures, d***s, drains, hedges and tyre tracks. The form is derived from necessity rather than decoration. Often it pegs and slots together celebrating an honesty in the materials and holding tension within the piece.

Victoria's practice involves materials such as brass, copper and gilding metal juxtaposed against the dark hues of Fenland bog oak which dates from 3000BC. Sometimes she will bury her work in soil from her fathers land to achieve a patination on the metal.

"My family have lived and worked on this land for many generations. I feel a deep emotional tie to this area. The Fens are a constant source of contradictions, open yet closed, wide expansive landscapes are somehow dark and mysterious. The sky dominates your view and yet it is all about the land"

The nearby archaeological sites of Flag Fen and Must Farm have greatly influenced Victoria's work. Artefacts unearthed include pottery, beads and metalwork (swords, sickles and spears). She is captivated by the hidden treasures and evidence of past settlements – so much of it yet to be discovered.

Using basic hand tools and silversmithing techniques Victoria's work narrates the story of her ties to this land.

Viewing Room 13 with new paintings by Molly Thomson and new sculptures by Victoria Fenn.

Although working in different materials and pursuing their own techniques, both painter, Molly Thomson and sculptor, Victoria Fenn share an interest in architecture, form, memory, materiality and the hidden structures beneath the surfaces we encounter. Their practices are rooted in the processes of making, construction and transformation, creating work that rewards close observation and understanding.
