Jonathan's choice is these hop stilts, perfect for late August when the hop-picking season begins.

“I wouldn’t want anyone to think that I only chose the hop stilts because I enjoy the occasional glass of beer, but they’re a real reminder of all the hard work and skill that went into producing one of life’s simple pleasures.

I wonder how many people at their local pub gave a thought to the men standing twelve feet in the air on stilts like these, hanging the strings for the hops to grow up and then again during the harvest?

With just a couple of straps on their boots and a belt around their waist it’s fair to say they wouldn’t meet modern health and safety regulations. So, for them and all the men, women and children that worked on the hop farms… Cheers!”

We're not saying you *need* to go down a rabbit hole on our curator blog to discover beautiful peacock windows, but the option is always there. 👀

This small but striking peacock is one of several stained and painted glass panels in the Worcestershire County Museum collection associated with the Bromsgrove Guild.

The Guild was a company of Arts and Crafts artists and designers which grew out of Bromsgrove School of Art in the late 1890s. At its heart was a belief in the importance of craftsmanship, design and artisan achievements.

Go behind the scenes of the County Museum's beautiful and varied costume collection this September. 😍

With everything from the Georgian era to the 1970s to Ginny Lemon’s recent Vesta Tilley inspired outfit, the collection holds so many fascinating stories waiting to be discovered.

Enjoy a talk from the costume curator exploring these stories, then head to exhibition Captivating Costume for a close-up look at what's on display, and in small groups head behind the scenes to see even more from the collection.

Saturday 26 September, 11.15am – 1pm. £14.50 per person, which includes refreshments and admission to the County Museum. ☕
