Ooooosh!!!

Our battle to win top place of "Top Attractions in Kidderminster" in TripAdvisor might not have yet been achieved, however we have scored an almighty goal against the Museum of Carpet as we have pipped them to 3rd as they languish in 4th place!

I'm taking that as a win personally 😂

Continued effort on jet washing 40 years of grime and slime off the 1980s canteen carpet this weekend. One more day of this and it will be completed. Great work all around 💪 Kärcher

🔨 An update on a long-running restoration project...

Some of you may remember a post from a while ago showing the start of work on the original toilet cubicles within Drakelow Tunnels.

Our volunteers have continued the restoration, carefully scraping back decades of old paint before repainting and preserving these historic features.

Originally installed during the tunnels’ wartime use in the 1940s, the cubicles were later reused and adapted during the Cold War era, when Drakelow became a Regional Seat of Government bunker.

The next stage will be to complete the painting before replacing the toilet seats. The current seats were fitted relatively recently and are not original to the facility. They will be replaced with seats more in keeping with the appearance of the cubicles during their operational life.

While this may not be one of the most prominent restoration projects within the tunnels, it is an important part of preserving the everyday features that formed part of Drakelow’s working history.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers for their hard work and dedication, and in particular to Matt, who has been managing this project from the outset. 👏

🐧 The last thing we expected…

While deep in the tunnels today, we accidentally stumbled across a small family of penguins.

To say we're surprised is an understatement.

❄️ Specimens have adapted remarkably well to underground life.

We’ve started cleaning some of the original Flotex flooring inside the canteen. After more than 40 years of grime, slime and dirt, the original 1970s/80s pattern had almost completely disappeared.

We’re carefully jet washing the surface to lift the dirt, then vacuuming it away with a wet vac.

Slowly but surely the original pattern is starting to reappear!

It’s a messy job, but very satisfying bringing a small piece of Drakelow’s history back to life.

Our original Cold War ‘Woods’ extract fan installed in the 1980s hadn’t been run in a long long time! We thought it would be a good idea to test it. Sadly it needed some love after being sat since the late 1990s. We got it restored and it is now back in place and helps draw out moisture from various points within the museum
