Today’s Museum Week theme explores how #ArtisEverywhereMW so we decided to show you one of the more unusual places on a boat that you can find some magnificent and unexpected artworks. In this close-up of the figurehead from HMS Prince of Wales every detail from his elaborate carved curly hair to the gold buttons on his jacket have been crafted & painted. Figureheads originally helped those who could not read to identify ships by sight, so the brighter the better!

#EurekaMW
On 16 May 1901 the world’s first commercial turbine ship was launched by William Denny & Brothers, Dumbarton. Named after King Edward VII, the ship TS King Edward, was fitted with steam turbine engines. Previously ship’s engines used steam to drive pistons up & down, but thanks to the turbine inventor Charles Parsons, steam was now used to turn a series of blades, making ship journeys faster and smoother.

#BehindTheScenesMW We wear many kinds of hats in the Museum, but our Senior Curator seems to be taking things a bit far here? With those boots on she’s ready for anything, from climbing on board our oldest surviving puffer Spartan to stomping through the mud to inspect a ship’s hull. At least we know she’s dressed for the occasion.

#BehindTheScenesMW After a routine clean of our Horizontal & Vertical Planing Machine, we found this little keepsake tucked inside one of the supports. Was this happy smiling face a pin-up work inspiration for someone? Or maybe it was the football results printed on the back that made the machine operator keep this memento hidden?

Hello from Denver Colorado USA I have a large Royal British Navy-Marine Bell from AYR 1756 It weighs 29.2 lbs or 13.23 kg 27 cm wide 28 cm tall. It looks like it has been repaired a long time ago. The bell is at least 265 years old. It has a good ring to it still. If you are interested in having the bell let me know.

Sent this to the Dundee Courier last week with a picture(Photoshop fantasy). - Hi Courier! The NORTH CARR LIGHTSHIP. Hi Courier! The NORTH CARR LIGHTSHIP This is a heartfelt comment. Whatever the Dundee council says about the Wonderful Waterfront, Unicorn and the North Carr lightship are part of it - even if reluctantly tucked away. (You have to pass the North Carr light ship to get to Unicorn). Abdicated from direct control and excused financial support, I'm sure those in administrative control are well aware where things are going. Just wondering what the approach to the funding of the rusting beautiful old vessel is. RUST. Seen the care over Discovery? Good income after good investment. Inexcusible neglect of the North Carr lightship by the Council who should be supporting a proper refurbishment. They hope it's too late I think. As an attachment and inline I've added a Photoshop collage combined print of how it's fate might be. Your organisation is welcome to use the image in any way you wish. Kind regards and a hope I might have an effect! Dr J I R Burt
Hi, your alarm is going off in the Puffers building
What absolute nonsense regarding the dropping of ships names as 'She', the world has gone bonkers. Is the Director David Mann now to be referred to as David It?
