Heritage Open Day - Well Tours and Griddle Baking over the Open fire.

Volunteers will be taking visitors down to see the Spring Rock Well which would have served the 4 cottages that make up the museum.

The Well was unearthed after the extensive renovations of the end cottage, the former “chip shop” and the last cottage to be acquired by the Museum. A shaft dropped down from the doorway to the cellar beneath, about ten metres, many hundreds of people must have stood over the shaft whilst queuing for their fish and chips!

It was hoped to cover the shaft with a transparent, heavy-duty cover, with lighting at intervals, to enable viewing. This was not viable, however, and the door and window were transposed in the interests of health and safety.

The exact age of the Well is unknown, it can be said with some certainty it is at least one hundred years old, very probably even much older than that. It may even pre-date the cottages, existing in another form, the cottages are called Spring Rock!

Have you ever wanted to try Sashiko embroidery, but aren’t sure where to start?

Victoria will show you how to do this beautiful Japanese method of embroidery in a simplified way, without the pressure to adhere to strict stitch lines.

There will be a choice of kit from Victoria’s current Sashiko designs. All of the kits are suitable for beginners and employ simple stitch styles. Victoria will demonstrate all of the steps and the stitches.

A beautiful Sashiko kit is included within the workshop ticket price. and it will contain all of the materials needed to complete the project. All other tools will be available to use in the studio.
It is unlikely that the project will be fully completed in the workshop, but we will make good progress on it, and everything is contained within the kit to finish at home. Victoria will ensure you are well armed with all the information needed to complete the project.
This workshop is especially suitable for beginners to embroidery, as the stitches are very simple yet are used to great effect.

Kits can typically be made into needle cases, drawstring bags, or journal covers, and printed instructions are included

Kit contents included in the workshop, and for you to take home:
A choice of Sashiko kit from Victoria’s current designs. Each kit contains:
Pure linen panel
Daruma Sashiko thread cards × 3, each with 40m of thread
Sashiko needles
Embroidery pattern & guide
Fleece

The workshop will be held at Colne Valley Museum in Golcar, near Huddersfield, which is a working museum, where you can discover what life was like around 1840 when the cottages were inhabited by families of hand loom weavers. Volunteers in contemporary costume, demonstrate various crafts including spinning, weaving and clogging, and convey what life was like in the cottages. The workshop takes place in the main part of the museum.
