Part 2 of this months homework was to make a larger version of one of the thumbnails. I picked this one as I felt like it was something I could achieve in an hour (in-between commission work). I absolutely love it although I keep seeing things I want to change!! Must not touch!!! Next up is the last pic, it’s only 9cm x 12 and I’d love to give it more than 4 minutes of my attention on a larger scale.

Each of the reference photographs were in colour which I then attempted to paint in monochrome to get a better understanding of value. There’s a few I absolutely love, very hard not to cheat and go over the 4 minute mark!!

I was asked to paint Gilbert a while ago and although this isn’t my “usual” style”, the reference photo was so good it felt wrong to deviate from the scene. You just have to go where the subject takes you and I’m over the moon with how it turned out. Now, back to making a mess 😂

The next “homework” step is to create a painting from one (or some) of the thumbnails. I chose this one to try first as I loved the light behind the subject. I’m really struggling to paint in 32 degree heat however so it was slippy then muddy then slippy again. Need to spend longer than 2 hours but I’ll hopefully have more patience when I’m not painting from the depths of hell…

I took a day off from commissions today to work on some “homework”. Completed 24 fast and loose oil thumbnails to experiment and play with different ideas. I very rarely make sketches (feels like time spent not painting when I should be). However I’ve realised these aren’t just a fun thing to do, what a great way to get creative and take risks!!

Woohoo!! We made it to the end of the heat wave 😂 what a nightmare trying to paint this week, acrylics rock solid, oils slipping all over the place and brushes hardened enough to use as chisels 😂 I somehow managed to ALMOST finish 2 commissions and hope to catch-up next week. Commissions turn me in to an insta hermit, I can’t share the work and I’m not sure anyone wants sweaty pics of my sweltering and swearing 😂😂
