It’s such a pleasure to welcome back to Spring the wonderfully talented Jo Dewar, whose beautiful work is matched only by her lovely nature. We’re delighted to have her back in the gallery!⁣

This exhibition is rooted to objects and vistas that surround us on a daily basis.  Inspired by a love of pattern and colour in treasured items and beautiful vistas that make a canvas for expressive mark making and pattern which are at the heart of Jo’s practice. The everyday is never ordinary, it is rich with colour, structure and quiet significance.⁣
Jo expresses her observations through paint, print and textiles and the exhibition brings together a collection of works inspired by the environments she knows and loves.

This is David’s fifth one-man show at SPRING CHELTENHAM with work that continues to explore the relationship between text, shape, texture and colour.⁣
⁣
As an inveterate re-user and recycler of materials ( he is also an avid gardener and committed compost maker ) David constructs many of these collage pieces by piecing corrugated cardboard together in a series of cross directional layers.⁣

This provides a lightness and strength to the work and offers the possibility of creating Irregularly formed boards, as opposed to the traditional rectangle.⁣
⁣
There’s a delightful freedom and flexibility here, together with the singular challenge of organising paper collage across and over an uneven format.⁣

For example, the board is easily cut and objects can be set into the surface.⁣
⁣
David also enjoys adding small attachments as projections, as extensions that emerge from the overall shapes, taking the work in a more three-dimensional, sculptural direction⁣

Endpapers brings together a new collection of abstract collages by Tricia Crowther, constructed  from discarded vintage papers and antique books Tricia strips the materials of their original purpose to focus on shape, texture and colour.⁣
⁣
Her process is driven by visual balance, tension and a direct response to the paper itself. Through tearing, cutting and layering, these aged fragments alongside hand painted elements, she builds structured, contemporary compositions.⁣
⁣
The title Endpapers references the physical sheets that bind a book together. In this exhibition, Tricia takes what was once overlooked and re-imagines a new narrative. The resultant works are structurally complex yet emotionally resonant echoing the passage of time and the layering of human memory.⁣

It’s a real pleasure to welcome back to the gallery, during the first week of the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the incredibly beautiful work of paper artist Tricia Crowther.⁣
⁣
Tricia creates her wonderfully intricate work from recycled antique books, transforming the pages and covers of much-loved old books into delicate, imaginative abstract collages.⁣
⁣
There’s something particularly lovely about seeing her work in the gallery during the Literature Festival, where books and the stories they hold are very much at the heart of the week.⁣
⁣
We’re so delighted to have her back! ✨⁣

Jonathan Oakes is an experienced artist who is passionate about the natural world, the majority of his artwork is deeply influenced by environmental concerns. His highly individual paintings are abstract by definition but have an illustrative quality about them. He utilises layers and mark making to add depth and narrative. In general his artworks are created using mixed media on canvas, paper or large abandoned photographs. He hopes to create a starting point for the viewer’s imagination as they contemplate the artwork.

We are three artists and friends with contrasting styles and complementary beliefs.⁣
⁣
Between us, our work is challenging in its scale, bold and dynamic. It is poetic, atmospheric and dreamlike. It is subtly subversive, revealing and compelling.⁣
⁣
We take our artistic practice seriously and have fun while doing it. As second career mature artists, we have a strong commitment to our work and to our evolving perspectives but aim to do this with a lightness and a sense of enjoyment.⁣
⁣
Our shared inspiration includes freedom, individuality and self-expression. Reflected in our collective work, you will see a range of source inspiration. It may be places of beauty we have lived, places of beauty we live now, nature and changing seascape or our own bodies and self-identity.⁣
