Today is World Maritime Day! ⚓
An international day that recognises the importance of shipping and maritime industries in connecting communities, supporting trade and caring for our marine environment. 🪼
Here on the Hoo Peninsula, the River Medway, Thames Estuary and surrounding coastline tell countless stories of trade, travel, industry and the people who lived and worked on the water.
These rich maritime connections continue to be an important part of our local heritage today.

One of the Hoo Peninsula's hidden heritage gems is the Thames & Medway Canal, an ambitious engineering project that opened in 1824 and connected two of Kent's most important waterways.
For many years, it played a role in linking communities, trade and industry across the area, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape we see today.
That's why we're delighted to work with partners such as LV21, a unique historic lightship and floating cultural venue. Originally built to guide vessels safely through some of the UK's busiest shipping routes, LV21 now helps connect people with the stories, heritage and communities of our waterways through arts, culture and education.
This World Maritime Day, we're celebrating the waterways, ships and communities that have shaped the Hoo Peninsula's maritime heritage. From the River Medway to the Thames Estuary, these connections continue to play an important role in our local landscape.
