Castle Donington Museum is a little capsule perfect to share local stories, look closer at objects from the past, and think about how things have changed or stayed the same to today.

With our family quiz sheet and four talking points, you can find out about Donington Hall and our Public Houses past and present, plus general village history, beautiful archaeology, and even shoes!

Can you imagine having a good tidy up, when you have over 10,500 things to check through?!

Our museum volunteers meet every Tuesday to work behind the scenes, and one of our current projects is auditing all of our boxes. Photographs, letters, recipe books, postcards, paper bags, accounts and documents of all kinds… we barely have space to move while working through!

We keep careful records and don’t expect may surprises, but this kind of diligence is part of our being an accredited museum, plus it may help us spot items which would benefit from additional information adding to the system (which may help them be more useful in the future) or recognise a trend of items which could form a new display.

Would you find this satisfying, or an absolute slog?

Help!
At Castle Donington Museum we’re often asked if we have old maps and photos of how the village has changed. We do have some on display, including various aerial photos.

These two we don’t have dates for though. It may be you look at these and know “Those trees were cut down in X year, so it must be before then!” Or “Our extension was built in X year so it must be after then!”

If you can help us narrow it down, or can share with people who may be able to help, we’d appreciate it ❤️

Are you looking at your garden and thinking “That clump needs splitting?” or perhaps planning a replant of a border? 🌱

Our wonderful volunteer gardener and her hard working helpers have been bringing more order to the museum garden, but as weeds and slightly invasive plants come out, it would be good to fill the gaps to prevent weeds taking advantage again.

If you have a plant which would fit that need, it would be a great help! You can visit us Saturdays 10 to 3, or drop us a message about dropping plants off on a Tuesday when we are closed but have volunteers working.
