With the 80th anniversary of VE day, we remember that celebrating Victory in Europe was cause to party for many, yet many felt uncertainty awaiting news of loved ones, and it was a moment in the grief of those mourning.

The surrender of Germany was a turning point in the Second World War and cause to party, breaking tensions and creating joy in hard times. Fighting continued elsewhere though, and it was the beginning of a long time rebuilding lives.

This year we remember those who fought, those who served in many capacities, and those who waited, worked and endured on the homefronts.

Rain or shine (it is a bank holiday after all!) we’re open to welcome you at Castle Donington Museum today!

Pop in as part of the village’s May Day Market to ask about local history, show the kids some old school home items like our water pump and mangle, and find out about VE day locally, as everyone prepares to commemorate this week 💙❤️

Castle Donington had our first market charter in 1221 for our annual Wakes Fair and market, but our weekly market charter came in 1278 (Thanks Edward I!)

You can join in the celebration of our ongoing charter at the May Day Market, an annual event of everything with Morriss dancing, live music, traditional entertainment, fair games and rides, stalls and food! May 5th see how a village celebrates, and visit the museum 10.00am to 3.00pm for more local history and a relaxing garden 🎠🍔👑🎭

Will you be visiting us this Saturday? We're going to be open again!

April 19th to August 30th Castle Donington Museum will be open every Saturday 10.00am to 3.00pm, plus special events too!

Our two key exhibitions for 2025 are the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, and East Midlands Airport 60 Years Young, with plenty to explore and learn about your village's stories.
