Its core purpose is to use, for the benefit of everyone, its collections, displays, learning programmes, and events to explore the social, cultural and historical impact – the lived experience - of developments in computing over the past 80 years. Future generations will wonder how this massively important and transformative cultural development happened, so while 80 years is short in terms of human evolution, through hands-on and inclusive experiences we explore how these powerful devices became an inextricable part of all our lives and changed our world.

Looking for a hands-on Halloween activity? Why not try soldering! 👨‍🏭

Ever wanted to learn how to solder? 👻 Come and build Stinky, our friendly ghost. A rare opportunity to work with electronics and soldering with a kit you can keep!

No experience needed! Our in-house electronics expert will guide you through the basics as you build and test your very own Ghostie Gadget. 🔧✨

This week’s features our Acorn Cambridge Workstation 🌰

The machine started life as the ABC 210, one of eight computers planned for Acorn’s Acorn Business Computer (ABC) series. The series was aimed at business, research and further education users.

However, the ABC range was cancelled before any of the machines were shipped to customers. The ABC 210 was subsequently relaunched as the Acorn Cambridge Workstation, which went on to be sold in relatively small numbers to academic and scientific users.

This year’s theme, ‘Fast Tech: don’t bin it, bring it!’, highlights the small electronics we use every day and the importance of keeping them out of landfill.
Founded in 2018 by the WEEE Forum, International E-Waste Day raises awareness of the growing e-waste challenge and inspires action worldwide.

At the Centre for Computing History, we’re passionate about preserving the history of technology while raising awareness of its environmental impact. 💚

Happy Ada Lovelace Day from all of us here at CCH! ✨

Named after mathematician and computing pioneer Ada Lovelace, this international celebration raises awareness of and celebrates women’s achievements in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Lovelace is widely recognised as the world’s first computer programmer, for her work on Charles Babbage’s proposed Analytical Engine.

As Lovelace wrote:
“The Analytical Engine weaves algebraic patterns just as the Jacquard loom weaves flowers and leaves.”

It’s fascinating to think about these ideas being written down in the 1840s, long before the computers we know today existed.

Today, we’re celebrating Ada Lovelace and all the women working in STEM, past and present.

Give Your Old Tech a New Lease of Life! 🌍 ♻️

To mark International E-Waste Day, we’re celebrating our Broken Tech, Broken Earth project at CCH, which we’ve proudly run for the past two years. The project explores how the rapid growth of technology over the last 80 years has impacted our local and global environment.

To celebrate, we’ve partnered with SustainableTech4Good and Cambridge Online to introduce a permanent tech donation bin at the museum!

Looking for some Halloween fun? Join us at the Centre for Computing History from Monday 26th October to Sunday 1st November for a week of spooky activities, ghostly goings-on and gaming fun! 🕹️

👻 Tuesday 27th October, 2pm: Ghost Hunt with the micro:bit.

🪛 Thursday 29th October, 2pm: Electronics Lab: Meet ‘Stinky’ Our Friendly Ghost.

🎮 Friday 30th October, 2pm: ‘Spooky’ Game On! The Guided Tour.
