Gail Reid Artist

Gail Reid Artist Painting & drawing real life... I love a challenge 🎨 My work has a foundation in observational drawing. I am constantly challenged by the human figure.

I am interested in how our conditioning affects our reality, and what we judge to be beautiful or repulsive.

"I cycled here very quickly. I thought I'd cooled down but now realise I hadn't" and other 15 minute sketches from today's .portrait.club 🤣. Was great to have with us, home for a fleeting visit - managed to incorporate a glimpse of her on the 2nd image. Did some sitters a great disservice, but including all for completeness, except one (in following post).

While the canvases are drying, I'm really excited to be printing back at my spiritual home... 🥰. Thanks to Theo .and.ephemera for a refresher on the imposing but brilliant today. Now, just to decide which 2 dungophile invertebrates should be immortalised on linocut? 🤔... thoughts?!

I learned so much about portraiture by integrating the work of four great women artists into my Raft Of The Medusa painting, shown at last year. As well as scrutinising the choices and style of each reference, I tried to nudge them towards my style (last slides) without obligating the idiosynchracies of the original artists. Paula Rego's self portrait (image 3) was the hardest, because she did (brilliantly) distort from reality quite a lot. I cannot understate the extent to which doing relentless portrait sketching and figure drawing from life, and master copies in museums, helped me get these figures to fit credibly onto the 'raft'. Lighting, viewer angle, scale and perspective all had to be adjusted. I'm looking forward very much to doing a demo of my quick portrait sketching method, with live models, on Saturday June 27th at the SWA show. See link in bio for show info, there are some great talks, events and demos planned.

And... Kollwitz' etching seems as tragically relevant as ever. She modelled for it in the mirror with her young son Peter. He died in action, a teenager, in the first world war.

Loved seeing Katherine Tyrrell Making A Mark while visiting the Royal Society of Portrait Painters brilliant show - her blog is a treasure trove of razor sharp reviews, and advice for artists, dating back decades.

Bumped into Gail Reid, a past PAOTY heat winner and epic allegorical painter, at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters Annual Exhibition 2026 at the Mall Galleries this afternoon - and had a lovely chat.

I was back to finish off my photos of the three galleries of top notch portrait artwork - appearing soon in albums (from tomorrow) on my page
