has completely reframed my view of wasps. Potter wasps are so delightfully industrious 💖. Just like the Digger wasp (featured in Dungscape) that targets pest flies and carries them paralysed to her burrow as a 'larder', the Potter wasp targets leaf-eating insects like caterpillars, and carries them to her mudpot nest. Neither are aggressive defenders of their nests like social wasps - their sting is milder than a honey bee, because it's only designed to paralyse insects. Gardeners welcome them as natural pest control. We watched this beautiful wasp build her nest over several days, in France, then were lucky enough to catch her loading in provisions. 🐛 Sorry about shaky camerawork, I was on tiptoes!

The at is designed for letterpress work, but is great for printing relief blocks. Blocks have to be raised to Type Height with a support (here I used plywood and card). Blocks can be inked manually, or using the machine's semi-automated inking system. In this example, the colour blocks were inked manually with soy-based intaglio ink, and the black block with traditional oil-based relief printing ink. This print is part of 's project, supported by bursary award. Dungscape will be shown in August-September, and in SWLA's The Natural Eye exhibition in October. Went cafe sketching and found the brilliant Los Infiltrados They are playing here in La Rochelle today, having had to cancel a recent gig because of the awful wildfires further south. No mistaking great musicianship, check them on YouTube 😎. Egged on by family I gave them my sketch, they were very gracious 🎵🥰
