For Evelyn De Morgan, the rainbow was more than decoration – it was a spiritual symbol of hope. The artist was born in 1855. Here are a few of her paintings that feature rainbows.

🕊 'The Red Cross' – painted during World War Two to raise funds, the rainbow links war to the promise of peace.

💡 'The Light Shineth in Darkness and the Darkness Comprehendeth It Not' – a vision of light breaking through darkness, guiding the soul toward hope.

🚨 'SOS' – a figure reaches skyward toward a glowing spectrum, with demons and turbulent waters below.

Through these works, Evelyn invites us to look for light, even in dark times.

We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of legendary artist Yayoi Kusama.

Famous for her love of polka dots which feature in her paintings, sculptures, installations and more, Kusama leaves behind an incredible body of work that will continue to inspire us all.

It's little wonder that her work is the focus of one our most popular learning resources with its power to spark fascination and creativity in countless classrooms.

It's your last chance to see Holly Graham: The Warp/ The Weft/ The Wake at – on until 6th September.

Artist Holly Graham uses cotton, costume and performance to confront the city's colonial past.

👗 At the centre of the exhibition is an extraordinary Victorian-style gown, made in collaboration with Graham's mother, costumier Jennifer Graham. Created using cloth woven at Quarry Bank Mill, its layers incorporate references to Manchester's cotton industry, textile histories and archival materials.

The gown isn't simply a historical costume. Graham describes it as an 'embodied archive', bringing together memories, materials and histories that museums have often overlooked or left undocumented.

Happy birthday George Stubbs 🎂

🐎 'Whistlejacket' is probably the most famous horse in British art. The Arabian chestnut stallion won a major race at York in 1759 before retiring, his owner, the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, asked Stubbs to paint him.

Despite suggestions that a rider was originally planned, Whistlejacket was always meant to be unmounted.

Stubbs left out everything we might expect – no rider, no saddle, no landscape. Against a plain gold ground, the horse appears free from human control.
