You belong in a museum, but Sully belongs in a Disney film - he disnae belong in our cannon!

Object Conservator and punmaker Shannon Campbell documented an unusual day in the life of a conservator, when she had to remove Sully from a breech block.

Did you know? A breech block is that part of a cannon that stops up the opening of the chamber where the cannonballs are inserted. This breechblock comes from ‘La Girona’, a warship in the Spanish Armada that sank off the cost of County Antrim in 1588.

‘Partial Eclipse’, Alice Berger Hammerschlag 🌒

Alice Berger Hammerschlag was an abstract artist active in Northern Ireland from the later 1940s until her death in 1969. ‘Partial Eclipse’ is one of her more representative works - if you're lucky with cloud coverage in your area, perhaps you'll be able to see life imitate art! Clouds or no clouds, the celestial dance of the moon and sun continues to inspire today.

🎻 The Fleadh Cheoil may be coming to an end, but we’re keeping the ceol and craic going at our next Museum Late on Thursday 20th August, part of the Fleadh Fringe Festival!

Enjoy Irish trad musicians performing throughout the art galleries, Le Chéile bringing their blend of trad, jazz and blues to the Belfast Room, metallic embossing of Celtic emblems, St Brigid Cross making and plenty more surprises across the museum.

This beautiful Irish Festival dance dress is from the Aisling School of Irish Dance, based in County Down. Founded by Denise Catney, the academy focuses on the unique and traditional Irish “Festival” style of dance.

Each festival school designs their own dress, and this motif, designed in collaboration with artist Dearbhla McNally, combines both historical tradition and innovation. Inspired by Iron Age La Tène decoration and Early Christian Insular art, it features interlacing patterns, zoomorphic motifs, and a recurring bird.

You can see examples of La Tène and Insular art on artefacts in our Early Peoples and Saints & Scholars galleries, including the 7th century Clonmore shrine and Iron Age Lisnacrogher scabbard.

To celebrate the first-ever Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann in Belfast, and following performances at this week's festival, this beautiful velvet costume from the Aisling School of Dance is on display throughout August in our Early Peoples Gallery. It is exhibited alongside another Irish Festival Dance costume from our collection!

Explore the origins of Belfast’s first urban Gaeltacht during the Fleadh Cheoil at Ulster Museum!

In the 1960s, a visionary group set up Ireland’s first urban Gaeltacht right here in Belfast. This created the foundations for one of the most remarkable linguistic and cultural revivals in modern European history.

Over the past hundred years, many attempts have been made to revive the Irish language as the daily language outside the traditional Gaeltacht areas. Few have had a lasting impact like Gaeltacht Bhóthar Seoighe.

This exhibition looks at how the group built homes, raised children, founded schools, and established new communities where none existed.

In July 2016, designer Maria Grazia Chiuri became the first female designer for Dior in the label's history. She caused a stir with her debut collection which featured this ‘We Should All Be Feminists’ t-shirt, inspired by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s essay and TEDx talk of the same name.

The slogan t-shirt follows in the tradition of designer Katharine Hamnett, famous for her political t-shirts. Speaking to Dazed magazine, Hamnett said: “T-shirts are some of the strongest messaging tools for consciousness raising. You can’t not read them, and once you’ve read them, they stay in your brain, churning around, hopefully making you think and act.”
