Set in the picturesque 'Vale of the Deadly Nightshade', Furness Abbey was once the second largest Cistercian Monastery in the country. The site has been celebrated for it's beauty and visitors are left in awe at the peace, tranquillity and ambiance of this magnificent hidden gem. Our visitor centre offers an informative display and an amazing collection of stone carvings and artefacts. Our children's education room and special monk's habits are available to all visitors free of charge; and we offer free educational visits to schools, colleges and other organisations. The Furness Abbey gift shop holds a vast array of gifts, children's toys, traditional wines and books. We offer regular alcohol and food tastings, so why not pop in and see what we have on offer. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff look forward to welcoming you.

Have you ever noticed this little hut?

This is the original Victorian custodian's hut, and served as the entrance for visitors until the present visitor centre was built in the 1980s. It has a fireplace which would have kept the custodian warm on chilly autumn days 🍂

This is your final chance to visit Furness Abbey before we close for the 2026 season. As well as your final chance to visit the visitor centre & museum in its current format before an exciting new refurbishment, starting over the winter! 🤩

We're still open every day until Sunday 1st November, when we close for the 2026 season. There's still time to squeeze in a visit or two before we close!
