79 years ago an unknown sailor from the Merchant Navy was buried at Bacton Church. He was found washed ashore near Watchouse Lane on the 24th August. Sadly there was nothing to identify him, except that he was roughly about 50 years old. He was buried beside the other servicemen who sadly lost their lives during the Second World War.

Sent by Marshall Gotts to Ms Hunking (daughter of a Lighthouse Keeper) of Great Yarmouth.
Message on the back reads:

Pleased to say Mr H Pilgrim is slightly better today. Have just been to assist him to his bedroom. Dr would not allow him to be moved before. It seems to be an Apoplexy attack, but no signs of paralysis at present hopefully for the best. Though you would like to hear so sent this card

Arthur 'Dunt' Deeker 1886-1959. Born in Bacton in July 1886. he was 1 of 5 children of Joseph Deeker and Sarah Watling. ...

Arthur 'Dunt' Deeker 1886-1959. Born in Bacton in July 1886. he was 1 of 5 children of Joseph Deeker and Sarah Watling. He had 5 half siblings from his father first marriage.
Arthur served as a cook/baker in the 18th Field Bakery of the Army Service Corps, serving in Egypt. In pre war times, Arthur worked for Thomas Burrell, Baker on Keswick Road.

After the war, Arthur lived with the Cork family and later on with his sister and brother in law Arthur & Sarah Sadler. In his later years he worked as a Gardener and also car park attendant down Keswick Road.

Arthur died in North Walsham hospital in early 1959 aged 72.

With thanks to John Paul for sending the picture of Arthur. John's family (Arthur & Gwen Billingham) owned Keswick Bungalow that once stood down the end of Keswick Road, partly where Anne Stannard Way is now.
