Sudley House

Sudley House Sudley House is a well kept secret nestled in the leafy south Liverpool suburbs near Sefton Park. The former home of Shipping merchant George Holt and his daughter Emma, who gifted the estate and its painting collection to the people of Liverpool.

The history of Sudley House begins in the first decade of the 19th century. Nicholas Robinson, a rich corn merchant, bought the land for £4500. The exact date of the house is unknown, and neither is the architect. Some exterior features suggest it may be the work of Thomas Harrison. He was working on a number of commissions in Liverpool between 1811 and 1815. Nicholas Robinson was living in Sudley

The original features of Sudley House

From an original stained glass window in the entrance porch to the marquetry panels of the library bookcases commissioned by George Holt in 1884, explore the original features of Sudley House in our latest story from Senior Curator of Decorative Arts, Pauline Rushton. You can look out for some of the features on your next visit to the house – it may inspire you for your own décor projects at home! https://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/stories/original-features-of-sudley-house

Both before and after the Holt family moved in to Sudley in 1884, Liverpool merchant and ship owner George Holt carried out extensive changes to the property, both structural and decorative. "His taste in interior design was obviously influenced by the Aesthetic movement."

On this day in 1727 Thomas Gainsborough was born. Considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century, he painted quickly, and the works of his maturity are characterised by a light palette and easy strokes. Despite being a prolific portrait painter, Gainsborough gained greater satisfaction from his landscapes and is credited as the originator of the 18th-century British landscape school. He was also a founding member of the Royal Academy.

Rainbows have played a huge part in the past year as we all pulled together to stay safe and to support each other.

Tonight the Rainbow Bridge lights up for the first time as part of an illuminated art gallery at Liverpool’s waterfront near Museum of Liverpool and Merseyside Maritime Museum . The 2km trail can be experienced for 14 nights until 5 April and can be enjoyed by everyone in a safe, socially distanced way. If you live outside the Liverpool City Region, you are asked not to travel to the event but, don’t worry, River of Light will be back later this year when, it’s hoped, travel will be less restricted. For a trail map and details of the 11 artworks go to VisitLiverpool.com 🌈

Address

Mossley Hill Rd

Please bear in mind that there is very limited parking at the venue so public transport is strongly recommended. The drive from the city centre takes approximately 20 mins. The easiest route is to simply follow the road that runs alongside the river - the A5036 (it is called Wapping in the Albert Dock area). Drive south - the river will be on your right. The road will run for a few miles becoming Sefton Street and then Riverside Drive and will pass over several roundabouts - just follow the main line of traffic over them. Go past the Britannia pub and a short while later you reach a roundabout with a sign pointing left to the recycling centre. Here follow the sign left onto Jericho Lane and follow this until you reach a main traffic junction. Go straight across at these traffic lights (crossing the A561 Aigburth Road) onto Ashfield Road. At the next set of traffic lights go right onto Elmswood Road, then just before Mossley Hill church (which is on your right) turn right onto Mossley Hill Road. The entrance to Sudley House is about 500m along on your right. There are two railway stations within walking distance of Sudley House. If travelling from the city centre board at Lime Street Station - several services stop at Mossley Hill station. Alternatively, take the Southport-Hunts Cross line to Aigburth station (board at either Liverpool Central or Moorfields). This service runs every 15 mins. Several buses stop near Sudley House including number 61 from stand 5 at Bootle bus station to Elmswood Road bus stop (5min walk to Sudley House), number 82 from the Liverpool One bus station to Aigburth Road bus stop (10 mins walk) and the 80 or 80A to Rose Lane bus stop from Great Charlotte Street in the city centre (10 mins walk).

Has anyone seen these 2? I am certain I saw them in the gardens this past Sunday.
A pleasant thirty minute walk followed by coffee in the café and then visited the house, this morning and chatted with the staff. Brilliant!
What maintenance work is going to be done at Sudley House may I ask? I just wondered for visiting again in the Spring when it re-opens.
My health isn't up to visiting you today and for the FREE talk too on Mythology in Art which I would enjoy as well which is a shame I know. Maybe you can repeat it another time in the Spring when I'll be hopefully well enough to get to you?! It did rather 'take it out of me' walking to the Walker art gallery last week and around it to see the 'Mucha' special exhibition and by public transport!
As a child i was at Sudley a lot .I went to Sudley school both infants and juniors.I remember the allotments on part of the field the football pitches lined out.the old changing rooms at the top of the hill .the house with lovely gardens .the secret path covered in bushes and the rear cobbled entrance. The Mums in our street would pick us up from school on summer night a picnic was for tea and fun and games of summer nights lasting forever
Fabulous teddy crafts today. You've got the patience of saints. Thank you.
