✝Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this wafering iron in our collection.

🍷Wafering irons are iron tongs used to make Eucharist wafers for Mass. It has long handles and circular plates on the end which close. The long handles keep the user safe from the fire which would heat the wafer. The plates on this wafering iron are engraved with a cross and IHS design. When heated this would leave an impression on the wafer and it would then be used for Mass.

✝ Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this portrait of Thomas Nicholson in our collection.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Thomas Nicholson (1645–1718) was the First Vicar Apostolic of Scotland, appointed in 1694, during a lull in the persecution of Catholics in Scotland. He was a convert to Catholicism. During his term of office, he travelled throughout the whole of Scotland, including the islands, administering sacred sacraments to many who had received none since the extinction of the old hierarchy.

✝What's in our collection Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this painting of Saint Francis of Assisi in our collection.

😇 St Francis was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone around 1181 in Assisi, Italy. He rejected his family's wealth and devoted himself to a life of poverty. In 1210, he officially founded the religious order of the Franciscans. St Francis died on 3 October 1226. He was canonized 16 July 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and is known as the patron saint of animals and the environment.

✝Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this painting of the Assumption in our collection.

🕊This Saturday, the 15th, is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This painting from our collection is a copy of the masterpiece by Titian which hangs above the high altar in the Basilica of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice.

✝Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this beautiful chalice in our collection.

🍷The McGregor Chalice belonged to Rev James McGregor who was Rector of Blairs College. This chalice features gothic decoration, stylised trefoils with a heavy knop on the stem. It was made by Thomas Thomason and Company in Birmingham, 1877-78.

✝Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this portrait of Rev Leo Linse, the First Abbot of Fort Augustus in our collection.

⛪In 1876 the Lovat family, gave the old fort and land to the Benedictine order. The monks established Fort Augustus Abbey along with a school for boys. In 1888, Leo Linse, a Benedictine monk, was nominated as the first abbot. This painting is dated from 1893.

✝ Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this portrait in our collection.

🖌Printed on the reverse of the canvas is the title 'Lady Mary Leslie'. However, family records suggest that this may well have been Elizabeth Leslie, Mary's sister, and that the (much later) attribution is incorrect. The Leslie family was a prominent local Catholic family who were generous benefactors to the Church; not only in terms of funding but also several family members entered the priesthood and the convent.

✝Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this beautiful monstrance in our collection.

😇This monstrance features four scenes. The top left shows St Mathew with an angel and the top right shows St John with an eagle. The bottom left features St Mark with a lion and the bottom right features St Luke with an ox. The closer you look the more details you notice!

✝What's in our collection Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this portrait of Cardinal Ercole Gonzaga (1505–1563) in our collection.

🇮🇹 Gonzaga was born in Mantua, Italy and became a cardinal at a very young age. He died in Trento, Italy after contracting a fever. This portrait is believed to be from around 1555.

✝Happy Wednesday! Today we are re-highlighting this portrait in our collection of Monsignor Robert Clapperton painted by William Ferrier (active 1886–1891).

🎶In this portrait, Monsignor Clapperton wears the robes of a Vicar General possibly commemorating the occasion of the opening of St Fillan's Church in Newport, Fife, where the mass was sung by Clapperton.
