The 18th of June marks 211 years since The Battle of Waterloo, arguably the most decisive engagement of the Napoleonic Wars. The 92nd (Gordon Highlanders) Regiment of Foot played a crucial role in the battle, clinging onto the stirrups of the charging Scots Greys calvary, as depicted in this painting by Eric Auld.
The French lines were scattered, and the 92nd Regiment was welcomed back to Scotland with thunderous applause from a large crowd in Edinburgh. You can learn more about the 92nd’s involvement at Waterloo here at The Gordon Highlanders Museum.

The Gordon Highlanders Museum is proud to be supporting the Aberdeenshire Presidential Initiative at The Royal Highland Show 2026. We look forward to welcoming visitors to our stand where you can sample our Gordon Highlanders Whisky and chat about how we support the community in Aberdeen City & Shire. We hope younger visitors will be inspired by our scale model Lego WWI trench and we’d love to show you the real thing in the leafy surroundings of our Museum garden in Aberdeen’s West End. Bydand!

The 12th of June marks the anniversary of the surrender of the 51st Highland Division at St Valery-En-Caux. Amongst the 10,000 men captured were 1st and 5th Battalion The Gordon Highlanders, determined to hold the line until the eventual order for surrender was issued.
To mark the occasion we have delved into our archives and photographed the diary of Major George Bruce, who provides a detailed description of the day:
"Soon after enemy tanks approached HQ from cliffs. At same time Cease Fire was sounded on bugle in St Valery and numerous parties of French troops appeared in corn fields between our positions and tanks with white bandages tied to their rifles. At 10 30 hrs C.O. told individuals or small parties who wished to attempt to escape to do so. He then gave the order to ‘Cease Fire.”
You can learn more about St Valery, the Gordons as POWs, and their service in The Second World War in the Grant Room of The Museum.

Congratulations to Lewis, Lauren and Steven for completing The Aberdeen Kiltwalk last weekend! Collectively they have raised over £5,000 in support of The Museum, and we could not be more grateful for their amazing efforts, taking on the 18 mile Mighty Stride on a very hot day. Once again, thank you!

The Gordon Highlanders Museum wants to give another massive thank you to Gordon Highlander veteran Eric "Eck" Burnett for his astonishing effort at the Marathon Des Sables foot race earlier in April. After running a mindboggling 250 kilometers in the desert, Eric has successfully raised £2,775 for the Museum which he presented to the Edinburgh Branch of The Regimental Association. He also raised the same amount for the NHS, Longniddry Football Club and the Forth Valley Chorus. Thank you again to Eric for his superhuman effort! 💚
