BARÓ was founded by María Baró in 1999 and currently it is formed by its founder and Enno R. The gallery program has become a point of reference for international art in the Brazilian art scenes and, at the same time, has crossed borders, projecting Latin American art to other latitudes. Also, it has participated in numerous art fairs such as Miami Basel, Armony- NY, ArtBO, ArtBA, Sp-Arte, ArtRio, MACO-México, Arco- Madrid, ArtDubai, Frienze NY, Frieze Masters, among others. After twenty years in Latin America, BARÓ propused to expand its activities to the European continent, starting with the creation of the BARÓ House program ( Madrid, Spain ) as an experimental space for the encounter between creators, thinkers and collectors. In 2021, BARÓ Gallery gives birth to BARÓ Lisbon and BARÓ Mallorca. The first operates as a space for dissemination, projection and consulting, through programs such as BARÓ INsiTU, a platform for the development and production of contemporary art projects adapted to a specific architectual or landscape enviroment; a facilitating agency between artists, collectors, companies and institutions that promotes the integration of Site Specific works in public or private collections. The second, BARÓ Mallorca, initiating a new stage for BARÓ, inaugurated a new venue offering for the rapprochement between Europe and the Américas, as well as a part of the rich artistic panorama offered by the Mediterranean. BARÓ gallery, as a center for the arts, has been striving to allow the expression and diffusion of contemporary art languages, and has also become a facilititing entity between artists, institutions and collectors.

We are pleased to announce the representation of Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto aka VHILS (1987, Lisbon).

Peeling back the layers of our material culture like a contemporary urban archaeologist, VHILS reflects on the impact of urbanity, development, and increased uniformity on landscapes and people’s identities around the globe. Exploring the concept of creative destruction, he seeks to make visible the invisible that lies beneath the surface of things, creating powerful and poetic visual statements from materials the city rejects.

His work has been presented at institutions including MAAT, Lisbon; Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; Le Centquatre-Paris; MIMA, Brussels; Hong Kong Contemporary Art Foundation; Palais de Tokyo, Paris; and Barbican Centre, London. In 2025, he presented Doors of Cairo at the Pyramids of Giza as part of Forever Is Now.

Following a collaboration that began at Abu Dhabi Art 2025, VHILS’ first solo exhibition with the gallery, Latent, is currently on view at Baró Mallorca.

We are delighted to announce that Violeta Quispe has been awarded Second Prize at the XVII National Painting Competition of the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú, for her work Qincha Wichqana, which now joins the BCRP collection.

Her first solo exhibition in Paris, IMAYMANAM PACHA, Toutes les formes, un seul secret, opens at Baró Paris on 29 October.

In 1991/92, at the Chelsea Hotel in New York, David Medalla and Adam Nankervis founded the Mondrian Fan Club, an extension of Medalla’s earlier “Flying Mondrians.” In every city where they met, from Berlin and Amsterdam to Rome and Rio, the duo staged actions and photographed a “letter,” slowly spelling out a sentence in homage to Piet Mondrian.

Baró Talks: VHILS on Latent

In this episode, Alexandre Farto aka VHILS talks about the humanity latent in the materials that make up our cities: torn billboard posters, doors, tiles, the debris of demolished buildings. Things made and seen by people every day, yet rarely seen as a reflection of ourselves.

Through a process he describes as a kind of archaeology, VHILS recovers these discarded fragments and works into their surface to reveal the layers of time buried within them. Scarred and scratched, each piece becomes a contemporary fossil of the times we live in, carrying stories that were once trapped inside it back into the present.

His debut exhibition with the gallery, Latent, is currently on view at Baró Mallorca.

“Male Figure Reclining”, 1960, by David Medalla is on view in David Medalla: Le Désir Cinétique... at Baró Paris.

While kinetic art called for the rejection of any narrative or figurative reference, Medalla never abandoned figuration, nor did he ever hesitate to shine a light on his desire. Made in 1960, this watercolour belongs to the early years of a practice that would go on to define kinetic and participatory art.

Hoarding Series #07, 2017, is on view as part of VHILS’ solo exhibition Latent, here at Baró Mallorca.

The exhibition brings together several bodies of work built around the same gesture: carved wooden doors, torn billboards, ceramic tiles, and fragments recovered from demolished buildings, all shaped by removing material to reveal what lies beneath.

Hoarding Series #07 is part of VHILS’ Door series, in which the artist uses old wooden doors, and less often metal ones, taken from abandoned buildings, whether homes, factories, warehouses, hospitals or convents. Their worn, aged appearance carries the history of their long existence, from when the buildings they originally belonged to were still in use.

assume vivid astro focus presents “House of AVAF,” a new installation curated by Lia Vissotto, on view at Centro Cultural Sesi Itaquera, São Paulo.

Inspired by the House of Cards game created by Charles and Ray Eames in 1952, the work is built from illustrated faces that form a visual retrospective of more than two decades of the artist’s production.

On view through February 14, 2027.

David Medalla: Le Désir Cinétique... is now on view at Baró Paris, through October 24.

Paris was among the cities that shaped Medalla’s practice. In 1960, philosopher Gaston Bachelard introduced Medalla’s first performance in France, staged at the Academy of Raymond Duncan, brother of the dancer Isadora Duncan. He later lectured at the Sorbonne, and his work has been presented at the Centre Pompidou, the Musée d’Art Moderne, and the Jeu de Paume.

VENUS – Valentino Garavani Through the Eyes of Joana Vasconcelos is now on view at MAAT in Lisbon, as part of the museum’s 10th anniversary. The exhibition creates a dialogue between Vasconcelos’s work and more than 30 haute couture and ready-to-wear pieces by Valentino Garavani (1932–2026).

At its heart stands Valkyrie Venus, a monumental textile sculpture conceived as a tribute to the designer’s legacy, alongside iconic works such as Marilyn and Garden of Eden.
