Large Attic Black-Figure Eye Cup
Delicately crafted, deep hemispherical cup with a high foot and two very slightly curved handles, which extend to a height just below the rim.
A narrow black glaze band at the rim. Below, on each side, a large polychrome pair of eyes. Each eye is framed in black; the white eyeball features a large red iris and an oversized black pupil. Curved lines around the eyes create the optical impression of a nose when viewed frontally; the eyebrows are also indicated by curved lines. To the sides of each pair of eyes are figures of dancing youths (komasts) shown in profile, always positioned with their backs to the handle and looking toward the eyes. They are rendered in black with anatomical details highlighted by incision. One of the youths wears a red headband, while some others have hair highlighted in red.
Below, a broad encircling glaze band framed by three narrow bands on each side. A rays pattern surrounds the transition between the body and the foot. The stem and the top of the base are completely covered in black glaze, as is the interior of the hollow foot. Handles are black glazed, with only a narrow reserved band on the inside. Beneath the handles (between the komasts), harmoniously curved and nested drops/brushstrokes, topped by a dot and a stylized leaf. The interior is completely black glazed except for a small central reserved circle containing a black ring and a concentric dot
