This Friday, in the Community Gallery, we welcome A Year Without Christmas, an exhibition by Polish-Canadian artist Wanda Slawik.

When the COVID-19 pandemic brought isolation and uncertainty into her life, Wanda turned to art to document her experiences and process the emotions of that difficult time.

Through her work, she reflects on the loneliness many people experienced during the pandemic, while reminding us of our shared need for connection, joy, and hope.

Join us in the Community Gallery from October 16 to November 29 to experience A Year Without Christmas.

It is a rare privilege to see a Piping Plover.

These tiny shorebirds are one of the most at-risk bird species in North America. They spend their summers along sandy and gravel beaches across the Atlantic Coast, Great Lakes, Great Plains, and Prairies.

Their small size and colouring help them blend into the sand and stones, but these open habitats also leave them vulnerable to development, predators, and increasingly intense storms.

Exhibition Extended!

There's still time to see Reach Out by Ray Kehler and order limited-edition prints directly from the artist.

Remember, 80% of all print sales go directly to Main Street Project.

The exhibition is now on view in the MHC Community Gallery through October 6.

From just 16 birds in the 1940s to more than 500 today, the Whooping Crane has come a long way from the brink of extinction. 🪶

These endangered cranes migrate between Canada and the United States, moving through wetlands, prairie landscapes, riverbanks, and coastal habitats along their journey.

Their recovery has been supported by international conservation efforts, but protecting the habitats they depend on remains essential to their survival.

Come and join Dr. Roberta Bondar in her journey to photograph this remarkable North American bird!

Reach Out by Ray Kehler is still on view in the Community Gallery! ✏️

Ray describes his work as an invitation to look beyond, and to remember that people living on the street are “real people, with feelings and needs like you and I”.

The exhibition is also an invitation to work together and support community services. As Ray puts it, while there is little we can do alone, together we can make a difference.

Limited-edition prints of Ray’s artwork are available to order, with proceeds donated to Main Street Project.

The smallest member of the flamingo family, the Lesser Flamingo spends most of its life around a few select lakes in Tanzania and Kenya. 🌍

These soda-water lakes may be inhospitable to almost all other wildlife, but they provide an ideal environment for Lesser Flamingos. Their social, group behaviour is essential to their survival, from feeding to breeding.

When changes in the environment affect their food sources, the flamingos make nomadic journeys between these lakes. But as human development continues to place increasing demands on water resources, the water levels and quality of these unique habitats are also being affected.

As part of Patterns & Parallels: The Great Imperative to Survive, Dr. Roberta Bondar brings us closer to the world of the Lesser Flamingo and the habitats it depends on.
