618 ARTlington

618 ARTlington A Winnipeg creative hub, home to 30+ artists in 21 studios. 618 ARTlington is a unique historic space renovated with reclaimed materials.

Open by appointment and during our three annual events. Ask to join our waitlist! 618 ARTlington Studios is one of Winnipegโ€™s most unique and inspiring creative hubs. Originally built in 1912 for the Northland Knitting Company, the space has a rich history, having housed local businesses such as The Alpha Manufacturing Company (during WWII), Monarch Wear (and subsidiaries, 1941-56), National Uphol

stering (1961-78), and Ram Wools' Warehouse (1978-95). One hundred years after it was built, John Hunsberger transformed the space using reclaimed materials, eclectic antiques, tin tile, wrought iron, stained glass, exposed brick, and more. The building itself is a work of art and must be seen to be believed. It is now ome to over 30 artists in 21 studio spaces. Visit during one of our three annual events and you'll seen a wide range of mediums on display, including ceramics, painting, textiles, glass, and more! In 2025, the building was purchased by Andrew Major, with exciting plans to renovate and open up the basement and fourth floor to create even more studio spaces. If youโ€™re interested in joining this vibrant, creative community, ask about being added to our waitlist for future studio openings!

Have you been thinking about getting an art studio here in Winnipeg but have been holding back for some reason? Well, consider this your sign to finally nab one, because not only are our newly renovated Lower Level studios the coolest place to be (seriously, the summer heat ain't touching these spaces!), but they're also currently offered with the first month free (with a one-year lease)!

Today 618 will once again be open for Doors Open Winnipeg! This annual free event encourages the public to explore historic buildings in the city. It's an opportunity for discovery, education, fostering community and appreciating Winnipeg's architectural and cultural heritage.

Our building dates back to 1912, when the Northland Knitting Co built it. In 2012 it was renovated using reclaimed materials, eclectic antiques, and a distinctive design approach. Now home to 30 art studios, it blends historic character with contemporary creativity. This year marks the first Doors Open with our fourth floor and newly renovated lower level available for self-guided tours.

In addition to opening our doors for you to wander our historic building, we will also have 20+ artists on site with open studios! Some will be doing art demos, and all will be happy to talk to visitors about art and our building! We hope to see you there (and don't forget to enter the People's Choice Award, Social Media Contest, and Golden Boy Scavenger Hunt!)

You may have seen pottery with complex or precise shapes and wondered how an artist managed to do that. One of the ways is with a fascinating ceramics process called slip casting, and will be ready during our Discover 618 event to demonstrate it! In studio 3-5, sheโ€™ll walk visitors through a variety of techniques, including the careful hand-carving she uses to create her intricate surface designs and layered colours. Youโ€™ll also get to see plaster molds, where she pours the liquid clay to create detailed forms. Mel is excited to chat about her art and answer any questions you may have!
