Pictured here, dated the morning of October 14, 1966, we see the Stonefax sunken in the canal near Port Robinson. The Stonefax was struck by the passing ship The Arthur Stove early in the morning as the two ships were passing each other. In a court document from the proceedings that took place between October 29, 1970, to December 21, 1970, the trail judge ruled the fault be on the behalf of The Arthur Stove. As the Arthur Stove was moving at too quick of a pass within the canal and wasn’t accounting for bank suction as they should have been.

The sinking of the Stonefax happened exactly 60 years ago, today. Do you or anyone you know remember this event? Let us know in the comments!

Early in morning of October 13, 1812, the American Army lead by Major General Stephen Van Rensselaer crossed the Niagara river from Lewiston invading the Niagara Region. The resulting battle at Queenston Heights killed British Army officer Major General Isaac Brock. However, thanks to the efforts of Mohawk chiefs John Norton (Teyoninhokarawen) and John Brant (Ahyonwaeghs) as well as 80 Haudenosaunee and Delaware warriors the Americans were held at bay. This allowed time for Major General Roger Hale Sheaffe and other reinforcements from Fort George to regroup and reclaim the heights from the American forces.

The battle Queenston Heights had been recaptured by British forces, and estimated 955 Americans were held captive by British forces.

Now a days you can find Sir Isaac Brock's Monument atop Queenston Heights to commemorate the battle that took place there.

Pictured here, circa 1956, is a stunning aerial view of the Union Carbide plant along the canal. In this image you can still see the old lift bridge, Bridge 16, which was located on Ontario Road. Union Carbide was once a major contributor to the steel industry in Canada, originally opening a location in Welland back in 1914.

Pictured here, dated August 26, 1963, is a beautiful shot of a lively East Main Street. In this frame you can see the Park Theatre and Capital Theatre across the street from each other. While also being able to see the glowing sign of the Reeta Hotel on the right side of the frame. While of course also being able to see bridge 13 towering at the end of the street. We must thank Ontario Hydro for taking this wonderful photo of the downtown region.
