For September, and back to school season, we've decided to select this Welland High and Vocational School freshman beanie as our "Artifact or the Month".

For more than a century, this educational institution was a cornerstone of Welland, for its commitment to education and opportunities within the community. This beanie comes from the 1960s and belonged to the donor's brother, Mark Pasis. These caps were a tradition that was meant to distinguish the freshmen from the upper class students, you can imagine how well that went for the freshmen.

📚️ Happy September 🏫

It's back to school month, which means it would be the perfect time to swing by the museum and learn something new! This month for some free programming events, as well as a few days with extended hours!

Concerts on the Canal comes to an end this month which means there's only a few days left of our extended hours. Those days being September 4th and 25th, so come in, get out of the sun, and maybe pick up some "It's All Welland Good" merch while you're here!

Making up for the cancellations that happened over the summer, we have one more day where we are offering our historic walking tours around downtown Welland. Happening September 12th, we're offering both our historic buildings and mural tours on the same day. The mural tour will start at 10:30am and the historic buildings will take place at 2:30pm, each tour is only and entry fee of $5. Feel free to pop by and explore the fun history of the downtown buildings and beautiful murals on display!

Next, join us on Saturday, September 26th from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm for our next installment of Insights Into Our Past! Where we will be covering the ever important topic of Truth and Reconciliation, and how it remains important in the social sphere of Canadian Culture and identity.

Then starting this month and running up until November 30th, we're offering our Messy @ the Museum programing. Kids are welcome to come by and experience a blend of imagination and discovery at the Welland Museum, for the small fee of $5 per week.

Lastly, happening on September 30th, we have our special Truth and Reconciliation Day film screening event. Taking place after the flag raising ceremony at city hall, at 10:30am and again at 5:30pm, we will be screening three films that cover important subjects related to Truth and Reconciliation. Starting with 'Honour to Senator Murray Sinclair' following with 'Six Miles Deep' and ending with 'Birth of a Family'. Light refreshments will also be available at both screenings.

This Photo, dated as September 1964 shows a magnificent sailboat passing under Bridge 13. Crowds are gathered on both sides of the Welland Canal to what as this ship makes its passing. Although we cannot see the name on the front of the ship, we can take an educated guess that this ship would have been the Chistian Radich. The Norwegian ship was on display at both the Chicago harbor and the Toronto CNE during this timeframe, and this ship has the same features of Christian Radich.

Although this is just and educated guess on our behalf, we would love to hear any more insights from you. If you know anymore about this ship passing, we’d love to hear about it in our comments!

Pictured here is the 1993 roster of the New York-Penn League team the Welland Pirates, the team was an affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates and competed from 1989-1994. The team is lined up on the infield, in front of home plate at Welland Stadium, the current home of the CBL team the Welland Jackfish. The Welland Pirates relocated to Erie Pennsylvania, in 1995, where they still exist today as the Erie SeaWolves.

Some of the alumni of the team are Tony Womack who played for Welland in 1991, Tim Wakefield who played for Welland in 1989, and Jeff Banister who played and managed the team.

This photo of the team is a great reminder of the deep and rich history Welland shares with the great sport of Baseball.

Pictured here in Black and White, is a roster photo of the Welland Luckies, a women’s softball team sponsored by the Welland Lions Club. Unfortunately, we could not find anymore information on this photo as the roster itself has been cut off at the bottom of the frame, and we could not find any more information through our research.

However, we still wanted to highlight this team, as there is still a rich history of women lead softball/baseball teams in Welland. There is a trophy centered in this photo meaning this club was a standout to others, and through our research we were able to find other women teams sponsored by Plymouth Cordage who found similar success.

By highlighting this team which we have little information on, we’re hoping someone out there would have more information on these players. We’d love to hear anything you might know about this team, or others like it in the comments!

This week's Top Pick Thursday was selected by our Guest Administrator, Campbell. He chose this Vintage Baseball Uniform from the Plymouth Cordage team because "I knew this week we were focusing on baseball themed artifacts in our collection, and I love going to Jackfish games. I've been looking through our collections of baseball paraphernalia and this is the one full piece of uniform we have, so I thought it would connect well with this week. It ties in two things that make Welland special, the history of blue collar work, and Baseball."

Pictured here in black and white, is a man posing in full baseball gear mid swing. The uniform has a logo of a large C on the left side of the chest with the British Flag within the center of the C. Although you cannot see the logo in this photo, we have more photos of this man with the same uniform on in our collection.

The photo is dated as being the year 1941, though we do not have much more information on this baseball player or which time he is playing for.

We would love to hear about any details regarding this baseball slugger or what team he played for in the comments!

Pictured here is a group of five children lined up taking turns swinging at a baseball. In this shot, it might be hard to see at first, but this photo actually captures the baseball in frame while the kid is mid swing. The children are playing in a field with an unidentifiable building in the background.

We do not have a punctual date for this photo, the only identifying object we have in this photo is the one kids Montreal Canadians shirt. Due to the design of the H within the logo, we can only identify this as the logo used after the 1956 season. Adding the children’s wardrobe into consideration, the appearance is similar to the fashion of pants and hair style that was popular around the 1970s.

This unfortunately the only information we have to operate with, so if anyone else has any information that could help us narrow down a timeline, we’d love to hear what you have to share in the comments!

Are there any Baseball fans out there? This week in honor of the last regular season game for the Welland Jackfish, we wanted to dedicate our post to the rich history of Baseball Welland has.

Starting today and continuing for the rest of the week, we will share something from our collection that is related to the great game of baseball. In honor of all those heavy hitters who came before us, and those that have yet to make their mark in our cities history.
