The community of the Great Lakes Museum (formally Marine Museum of the Great Lakes at Kingston) is saddened to learn of the passing of Maurice D. Smith. As Director and founding Curator of the museum from 1979 until 2004, and subsequently as Curator Emeritus, Maurice leaves a lasting legacy through his stewardship of the museum’s comprehensive collections—holdings he was instrumental in both forming and developing. The museum and maritime community are significantly diminished by his loss.

A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m., April 29, 2026 at the Gordon F. Tompkins Funeral Home, Central Chapel (49 Colborne St., Kingston, ON, 613-546-5454).

This photograph taken on January 18, 1921, of Engine No. 83 at the Collingwood Shipyards highlights the sheer size of a triple expansion engine before it was lowered into a ship’s hull by crane.

Triple expansion engines were compound engines that expanded steam in three stages, using three cylinders at three different pressures.

In the early 20th century multiple expansion engines were the dominant form of marine propulsion. Although newer, faster engines were developed in the 1920s, triple expansion engines continued to be used on Great Lake vessels that did not require high speeds and remained common among bulk freighters well into the 1950s.
