join us at the FLUX gallery space for a talk on Jamaican history & culture

inspired by our recent book club pick, “A History of Seven Killings”, we will be inviting Dianna and Hazel to share stories about Jamaica in the 1970s

Dianna, a founding member of Jamaicans on Vancouver Island Canadian Services Society (JOVICSS), and Hazel, co-founder of 250 Jerk JA Ltd, migrated from Jamaica to Canada. They both have been active voices in sharing and preserving Jamaican culture on Vancouver Island. Hazel brings first-hand knowledge of experiences during the period referenced in the featured book, A Brief History of Seven Killings. She will be offering a valuable perspective on Jamaica’s social and cultural life at that time. Together, Diana and Hazel are committed to fostering dialogue around Jamaica’s political climate, vibrant music scene, and the lived experiences of the Jamaican diaspora.

Screening of Pride (2014)
In partnership with the South Island Workers Culture & Education League
July 11, 6:30 pm
At FLUX Media Gallery, 1524 Pandora Ave.
Free to attend. Snacks provided. Donations appreciated.

Accessibility notes: FLUX Gallery is located at street level. However, our single-stall, all-gender washroom is not wheelchair accessible.

“Pride” takes place in London and Wales in 1984, deep in the Thatcher Era of the UK. It tells the story of LGBTQ+ activists supporting Miners in the labour struggle. The movie has amazing music and manages to be quite funny despite the heavy topic.

There will be a short talk after the film which is 1 hr 59 min long and also a quick round table for people to debrief about the story.
