As part of our new exhibition آبِ رواں Aab-e-Ravaan: Language Like Water, our exhibition team created a special tent space in our inner gallery to display an installation featuring a community engaged textile work. This textile piece seen on the table was created by the artist , and dozens of South Asian, Indigenous and Persian community members through stitching circles.

We invite you to visit this space for respite, rest and to hear the soundscape audio loop which is an Urdu poem by Mirza Ghalib. Recorded by Farheen in English and Urdu, the poem is about grief and joy, and connects with Farheen’s own grief in relation to familia dislocation.

The installation is entitled:
آ دا ب
Aadaab KELKE,IŁĆ
(I Pay My Respects to You, Wild Rose)

The University Art Collections and Libraries respectfully acknowledge the recent passing of artist Carole Sabiston.

A recipient of an honorary degree from UVic, Sabiston was also a UVic alum, and treasured member of the Victoria arts community.

Speaking on the occasion of her honorary doctorate in 1995, Dr. Anthony Jenkins said, it was “Those assemblages of thread and fabric that changed what used to be “craft” into fine art… She is a true original.”

Often described as luminous, exuberant, and celebratory, Sabiston’s impressive oeuvre was recognized by numerous national awards throughout her career. The university is honoured to display her work on campus – Howe Sound and Tsawwassen Suites (not shown) is on the main floor of the Engineering Building and Take Off: Point of Departure and Mode of Travel (1987) is in the Michael Williams Building lobby.

Happy Solstice to all! This beautiful and whimsical image entitled "Nocturne" is by artist Stella Langdale. It reminds us that the nights are long this time of year, but there is beauty and discovery in the darkness. Longer days are just around the corner.

Stella was a contemporary and friend of one of University Art Collections cornerstone donors and artist in her own right, Katharine Maltwood. Katharine collected many of Stella's pieces and as a result, our collection holds a number of her works - which you can view on our collections portal: https://legacycollection.uvic.ca/rpt/f?p=103:38:14357632102693::
....

Born in Staines, Middlesex, Stella Langdale attended the school of art at Brighton for several years, followed by a period of study under Frank Newbury and Maurice Grieffenhagen at the Glasgow School of Art. This sound technical training allowed her to experiment in oils, watercolour, charcoal, pastels, etching techniques and sculpture. In inspiration she followed the sublime landscapes of the British Romantic tradition and the visionary works of William Blake, John Martin and Samuel Palmer. For subject matter Stella Langdale preferred to travel abroad wandering from place to place sketching and absorbing the history, poetic beauty and mystery of remote areas in North Africa, Italy and France. In this wanderlust and love of adventure she found a freedom and a different interpretation of life which is reflected in all her imaginative work.
