It's National Fossil Day and we're going to talk Barchiosaurs.

Even though its name means the “Arm Lizard” it is the neck of Brachiosaurus that really steals the show. One of the largest animals to ever walk the Earth, the sauropod (‘lizard foot’) family really tipped the scales when it came to massive reptiles. Weighing up to 100,000lbs. (as much as 20 African Elephants), they would have towered (at a whopping 40-45ft) above even the largest meat eaters.

Our specimen is a basal brachiosaurid (a very early species that set the stage for later giants) or perhaps even a new species! Thankfully our skilled technicians will solve that mystery as they continue to work their magic on the rock.

At Dino Lab, we have never been afraid to speak up for what we believe in, and Day of the Girl Child is no different. Women fight everyday for the right for bodily autonomy, and the right to a future that they’ve chosen for themselves. This year, the United Nations is highlighting the unrelenting danger of child marriage. Around the world every three seconds, a girl is forced into marriage before adulthood, averaging to 12 million per year. Thanks to the ongoing fight, over 68 million child marriages have been averted due to the past 25yrs of research, legal reform, and social protection. This is why we cannot stay silent, and must continue standing up for young girls wherever we can.

Today, it’s only because of women like Mary Anning that some of us may experience equal space for women, not only in science, but in every aspect of our daily lives. This is still not the reality for everyone around the world. Never stop standing up for our young scientists, so they feel strong enough to stand on their own, and speak for themselves when we cannot be by their side.

Sit in our Natural History Museum while we read stories and explore the Halloween decorated gallery! Costumes are welcome!

This is a fun and interactive way to spark curiosity, creativity and a love of science in young learners.

On this day of Truth and Reconciliation, we are humbled by the strength, resilience, and integrity shown by those who survived the attempted genocide carried out by our own churches and governments.

These are traits no human should have to develop as a result of the trauma of enduring and surviving their fellow human beings trying to erase them.

It’s long past time for us to recognize when we are being divided and pushed toward hate in order to serve someone else’s agenda. We need to stop falling for it and simply do better. Be better.

Artist statement

This is an image that I've had in my sketches for a while, the meaning around it is a new beginning. With the findings of our young ancestors we lost to residential schools, a lot has come to surface from stories, hurt but new light as represented with the sun. The fire is there to represent the healing and ceremony that comes with the findings. A lightness and truth that has only been told to a few. The residential school image is behind the fire to show the responsibility of these schools where our young ancestors have been found. The hills are there to represent the grounds that our ancestors are being found in; ground that holds stories, hurt and new healing. Then finally our young ancestors are represented as the seven figures symbolizing the seven generations before us.

Leading into a time of Truth & Reconcilliation there is much work to do.

I keep seeing posts like this....

This is not just Cultural Appropriation but Ai based slop, created to piggyback on a date meant to honor and hold space for the Indigenous.

Before you buy Indigenous art or clothing, please make sure there is a real, human artist behind the work and that someone else isnt profiting off their stolen art work.

Ask the seller who the artist is, what their payment arrangements are with that artist. Were they paid outright for the image? Commissioned? Getting a share of sales?

Any vendor should be able to answer that.
