This barrel top stencil is from the George J. Carter Premises in Herring Neck, NL. George Carter took over the E.J. Duder firm in Herring Neck in the spring of 1895 after Duder declared bankruptcy. By 1910, George's son, Frank, had taken over. Eventually, Joseph White, Sr. of Twillingate took over the Carter firm and operated the business until about 1965 when Harold McGinn became the new manager. By 1967 the company closed and in 1970, Earle Freighting Services leased the premises and used the facility for their fleet of long liners. They eventually folded in 1974.

Recently the boat builder, Calvin, had some of the summer students helping with filling in the screw holes. Did you know one of our punts uses 1600 screws! 😲
Next comes the dusty bit as Calvin will sand the boat down again. He was a perfectly smooth surface before he moves on to caulking.

This brass compass in set in a wooden box with a gimballed brass bowl. The gimbal allows it to move within the box while staying level. The compass card is marked with 8 points and the outer points are divided into 90-degree sections which was common until the 1900s. It was changed to a 360-degree whole circle bearing system to stop calculation confusion, reduce communication errors, and streamline marine navigation.
