Did you know that in Newfoundland, a taut (often spelled tawt or dawt and pronounced to sound like caught or thought) is a local dialect word for a thwart, which is the wooden cross seat in an small, open boat.

And our tauts are going in!

The Isles Wooden Boat Builders Museum is now closed for the season.

We are sad to see the end but so grateful to all those who came out to visit and supported the museum this summer. We had a record number of visitors this year and we loved sharing the history and heritage of wooden boat building of the Twillingate Isles.

The museum will still be available for group bookings by appointment until the end of October. Email the museum at [email protected]

Ever wonder what those little pieces of cork were doing on old fishing nets?

Cork comes from the thick bark of the Mediterranean Cork Oak Tree, which grows mainly in Portugal.

One of the amazing things about cork is that it’s a sustainable material. The bark can be harvested without harming the tree, and the tree grows a new layer of bark over time.

Cork is also lightweight, buoyant, and waterproof — making it perfect for use in fishing.

These pieces of cork would have been strung together along a fishing net, helping the net float vertically in the water.

A simple piece of cork, but an important part of the tools and traditions of our fishing heritage.

Help Shape the Future of the Isles Wooden Boat Builders Museum! ⚓️

The Isles Wooden Boat Builders Museum is looking for new members to join our Board of Directors!

We are a not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich tradition of wooden boat building that played such an important role in this historic outport community.

Our work includes:
⚓️ Preserving and exhibiting the design and construction of traditional wooden boats
🛠️ Promoting an interest in the intangible heritage, development, building, and use of these boats
👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Educating the public through interactive activities, demonstrations, and displays
🤝 Building partnerships with like-minded groups and individuals throughout the Twillingate area

We’re looking for community-minded individuals who are interested in helping preserve our local history and heritage and who would like to contribute their ideas, skills, and enthusiasm to the future of the Museum.

You don't need to be a wooden boat builder or a museum expert — just someone who cares about our community, our history, and keeping this important part of our heritage alive for future generations.

This type of rotary foghorn was popular during the 1800s before the invention of electronic navigation devices. It was used by sailing vessels to alert others of their position and direction in foggy or low-visibility conditions. It operates with a hand crank, which, when turned, creates a loud mechanical tone. This foghorn was on a chartered boat by the Government of NL Fisheries department in the early 1970s. It was kept and used as a spare.
