A spotlight on Marcelo Suaznabar’s sculptures!

Marcelo Suaznabar creates fantastical characters out of clay and bronze and provokes the viewer’s imagination. Since the beginning of his career, he has been fascinated by the dispute between good and evil. He initially explored this fascination in his paintings, but in 2020, he delved into the three-dimensional realm and began experimenting with different kinds of clay and enamels. These characters are sometimes hybrids of human faces with animal bodies, and at times they are charming blobs with distorted human features.

The Bizarre Circle by Marcelo Suaznabar is still on, and here’s one of the favorite pieces of the exhibition according to you!

Artist Statement:
“Growing up in Oruro, Bolivia, I developed a profound connection to a landscape that is desert-like and intensely charged with magical energy. I spent a lot of time on my father’s farm and cultivated an instinctive affinity for the natural world, which is why the vast setting of the Altiplano frequently reappears in my work.

Within these environments, I construct hybrid figures that merge animal and human forms. Through these figures and landscapes, I examine the cycle of life and death, the passage of time, the mystery of the universe, and the quiet confusion of the human condition. Drawing inspiration from the likes of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel, I build upon their tradition of allegory and didacticism through my engagement with surrealism, using it as a portal into the subconscious and the architecture of dreams.

Underlying my compositions is a commentary on our looming environmental crisis. A crisis that is an unavoidable consequence of a society driven by greed and material temptation. My imagination carries me into mysterious internal realities, and using my surreal imagery and symbolism, I invite the viewer to enter that subconscious realm with me.”

Let the celebrations begin! The Art Dealers Association of Canada (ADAC) marks its 60th anniversary with a pop-up exhibition at Bau-Xi Gallery.

The exhibition will presents 90+ works from 52 galleries across the country. Our gallery will be presenting this work by Rick McCarthy, and another from Leily Derakhshani, which we will reveal soon!

The exhibition demonstrates the diversity and complexity of Canadian art and the galleries that exhibit it, and it’s not to be missed!

The Chambers of Nastaran Mirsadegh is on view until May 30th!

The Chambers is an episodic recounting of excitement, grief, and uncertainty, moving through Nastaran Mirsadegh’s imagined spaces. This new body of work is quite different from her earlier practice, as it adds a physical dimension to her intensely psychological practice. The works in this series were created in pairs and planned to be installed face-to-face on opposing walls, creating an invisible chamber that envelops the viewer. She didn’t begin the series with this concept, rather the idea emerged after she finished the first piece. She realized that she already had the entire space envisioned, and that she was itching to reveal more. She then painted the opposing viewpoint, expanding the imagined environment, and thus, The Chambers were born.
