The Aga Khan Museum provides visitors with a window into the artistic, intellectual, and scientific contributions of Muslim civilizations to world heritage. The Museum’s Permanent Collections of over 1,200 objects include rare masterpieces that reflect a broad range of artistic styles and materials. These portraits, textiles, miniatures, manuscripts, ceramics, medical texts, books, tiles and musical instruments represent more than eleven centuries of human history and a geographic area stretching from the Iberian coast to China.

Something otherworldly is coming to the Museum.

Opening Saturday, October 24, Saks Afridi: SpaceMosque brings to Toronto a world shaped by science fiction, Islamic visual culture, and collective memory, imagined by Pakistani American artist Saks Afridi.

At the heart of the exhibition is an extraordinary encounter. A mysterious vessel appears above Earth, setting in motion a story that blurs the boundaries between the familiar and the unknown, the earthly and the cosmic.

Through sculpture, installation, photography, and storytelling, Afridi builds a richly detailed alternate reality populated by traces of histories that feel distant yet strangely familiar, as though recalled from a memory just beyond reach.

Go behind the scenes as a new work by Dawit L. Petros is installed as part of Emergent Formations, 2026, his multi-site intervention for the Toronto Biennial of Art.

This installation in the Aga Khan Park is one of several interventions by Petros appearing throughout the Museum and its public spaces as the Toronto Biennial of Art.

Drawing on archival photographs, maps, illustrations, and other materials, Petros examines an 1884 British Empire military mission to Sudan and the complex histories of migration, empire, labour, and movement that connect its participants across continents.

Vivid blue pinecones, rich crimson embroidery, and centuries of Ottoman craftsmanship.

In the next video in our collaboration with Khamseen: Islamic Art History Online, Dr. Amanda Phillips takes a closer look at a large-scale Ottoman embroidery in the Aga Khan Museum Collection.

Likely created as a quilt or mattress cover, the textile brings together silk threads coloured with dyes made from madder roots, insect shells, iron filings, and other materials — offering a fascinating glimpse into craftsmanship and domestic life in the Ottoman Empire.
