In this series of beaded swatches, Bev Koski isolates abstract and geometric designs from family photographs and popular culture, presenting them in minimalist, reduced forms.

The titles situate each piece in a specific narrative of place and time such as 'Striped Robe in Blues, c. 1979' and 'My Red Gingham Shirt, c. 1979.' They reveal the abstract patterns and colours that surrounded Koski during her childhood in Northern Ontario, drawing from varied sources like a potato chip bag design or a TV personality’s tie.

Many also reference the textiles she and her family wore, such as the pattern of a pantsuit or Koski’s favourite shirt as a child.

Originally presented in 'Beads, they're sewn so tight' curated by Lisa Myers for the Textile Museum of Canada in 2018, this series is now on view as part of 'Made by Many: 50 Years of the Textile Museum of Canada.'

Join us on Sunday, October 18, for a free Mending Station workshop facilitated by Jocelyn Kagige.

In relation to her design practice and community wellness work. Kagige will be leading workshop participants in creating their own medicine bundles informed by her Anishnaabe Teachings while utilizing repurposed textiles.

Participants will also be provided the opportunity to create drum bags and are welcome to bring to their drums. Participants are also welcome to bring in their own garments and textiles for this workshop.

Don't toss it, mend it!

Join us on Wednesday, October 7, for a free Mending Station workshop facilitated by designer Dehmin O Cleland (Ojibwe/Odawa).

Informed by Dehmin's troubleshooting design process, participants are invited to learn how to rework garments using appliqué; a mending method and technique that can cover a stain or elevate a piece into something entirely new.

In honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we are highlighting the Every Child Matters Dress (2025), currently on display as part of ‘Always in Fashion,’ curated by Amber-Dawn Bear Robe.

This gown was worn by Jaylene Tyme, a Two-Spirit, Indigenous trans woman and drag artist, during the fifth season of Canada’s Drag Race. Made in collaboration with costume designer Sean Malmas, the gown incorporates motifs inspired by Andy Everson’s original “Every Child Matters” artwork.

As a Sixties Scoop survivor, Tyme felt it was important to dedicate her finale episode ensemble to the Every Child Matters movement, and the lives of Indigenous children who were taken from their families, communities and cultures.

We encourage our community to take time to reflect on the legacy of residential schools, honour Survivors, and remember the children who never returned home, not only today, but every day. Reconciliation is a continuous practice and as settlers, it is our responsibility to take action.

Please note the Textile Museum offers free admission to all Indigenous Peoples year-round. Indigenous visitors may take advantage of this offer by checking in at the Info Desk upon arrival.

This role will support the stewardship of the Museum's permanent collection and offers recent post-secondary graduates direct exposure to collection management and conservation processes, research, programming strategy, and cross-departmental collaboration.

This position is funded in part through the Young Canada Works at Building Careers in Heritage (YCW-BCH) program, and all applicants must be registered in the YCW candidate pool and meet the current YCW-BCH eligibility criteria.
