Please join us for the opening reception of 'Retracing Tatreez: Palestinian Thobes through the 20th Century'. Join us on September 24 from 5:30–7:30 PM as we debut a selection of Palestinian tatreez (embroidery) from the Textile Museum’s permanent collection—many of which have never been exhibited before.

'Retracing Tatreez' highlights what these textiles can tell us about the relationship between Palestinians and their homelands in the 20th century and beyond.

In this exhibition, curator Nina Rafique showcases these pieces with restored historical context and invites visitors to re-engage with their ways of storytelling. In doing so, 'Retracing Tatreez' explores what these embroideries can tell us about the unique regional connections between Palestinians and their homelands, as well as the journeys of these objects from the hands of their original creators to today.

Venetia’s textile work is deeply rooted in the locality of materials, practices, and ways of understanding and relating to the craft. In the Caribbean, Mas –like other forms of Caribbean masquerade practices, started from a mix of French elite traditions and the resistance and culture of free Africans primarily in Trinidad and Tobago. The creation of this practice is steeped in the mockery of European oppressors by way of mimicry and garb, and has evolved into a cultural practice which acts a a defiant expression of Caribbean identity.  Mas is respected as an experience akin to what you feel in places of worship. In this context, costuming is more than just pieces you put on, but objects which transport you beyond your individual everyday reality.  This feeling is the premise for conversations surrounding liberation and the decolonial origins of Mas.

Last month, we had the absolute joy of welcoming Sarah Zanchetta for a very special edition of our Second Life workshop series. With the generous support of Community One Foundation, we gathered for an afternoon of stitching and slow making. Workshop participants were introduced to the art of hand embroidery, transforming pre-loved fabrics into one-of-a-kind patches made for mending and customizing personal garments. The joy was in the process, the conversation, and watching unique pieces come to life.

A huge thank you to Sarah for sharing their expertise, and to everyone who came ready to create. We can’t wait to see where your patches end up!

Over the next few weeks, we invite you to explore the art of textile-making through a series of free community workshops and special events.

Our August lineup includes a Mending Station workshop (August 16), Embroidery and Appliqué workshops (August 19–21), Arpillera Self-Portrait Dolls (August 28), and Textile Memory Brooches (August 30). Each session offers a hands-on opportunity to learn new skills in a welcoming, creative environment.

We are also pleased to present a special screening of 'Becoming a Queen' (2021), directed by Chris Strikes. This compelling documentary offers an intimate portrait of one woman's pursuit of an unprecedented tenth title as Queen of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival.

In September, we are honoured to welcome Venetia Galanaki, visiting from Eastern Crete, Greece. She will lead a family-friendly weaving workshop (September 13), a three-part intensive exploring Cretan textile traditions (September 15–17), and a natural dyeing workshop (September 18). These sessions offer a unique opportunity to learn directly from a practitioner of Crete's rich weaving heritage.

Shoshoni Hostler is a Yurok artist whose wearable art grows from a reciprocal relationship with the Klamath River and the redwood forest. Her journey into beadwork began with her mother, a Native jewelry maker, and early regalia-making that shaped her belief that adornment is both cultural expression and lived practice. As she puts it: "My work is an honouring of connection to place and traditional design theory."

Caribana is just as much about the celebration of Caribbean textile practices as it is about a celebration of freedom.

In collaboration with Callowgrove Entertainment and Game Theory Films, get comfortable in our auditorium for a screening of Chris Strike’s riveting documentary Becoming A Queen, a profound discussion on Caribbean diasporic identity and culture in the 21st century.

This film explores the intersections of textiles, nationhood, resistance, and practice through moving image, providing a rich context to Mas costumers and masqueraders across time.
