Opening Next Week! | STEVEN BRUNELLE: Spirit Messengers

Join us for the opening reception with the artist in attendance on Saturday, June 6th from 1-3PM.

Nicholas Metivier Gallery is excited to present an exhibition of new works on paper by Steven Brunelle. Spirit Messengers weaves together Steven Brunelle’s interest in Indigenous mythologies with anecdotes drawn from his personal experiences and everyday surroundings in Lafontaine, Ontario, near Georgian Bay. Brunelle has spent his whole life in this area, having grown up only a few kilometers away from where he lives now. While he recalls sketching as early as his childhood, these vibrant, graphic renditions have been developing over the last two years. For Brunelle, paper allows him to process his ideas more immediately than canvas. He is more at ease working flat so that he can access the image from all sides, moving the paper around and allowing his hands to glide across the surface. Brunelle’s latest compositions are some of his most technically and conceptually complex. With an increased depth of field, Brunelle draws viewers into the multiple stories and influences playing out in each work.

“Ben Reeves is a celebrated Canadian painter whose richly textured works blur the line between memory and imagination. Inspired by the landscapes and moments of leisure on the West Coast, he builds compositions with bold, sculptural layers of paint creating surfaces that are as striking up close as they are from afar. His shimmering colour palette and expressive brushwork give familiar activities a fresh, almost magical quality. Collected by major museums and exhibited around the world, Reeves brings a powerful, contemporary voice to painting that is both accessible and deeply captivating. Reeves’ works are held in numerous collections including the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Vancouver Art Gallery.”

Opening Next Week! | BOBBIE BURGERS: Lightning Running Through

Join us for the opening reception with the artist in attendance on Saturday, June 6th from 1-3PM. DM us to RVSP.

Nicholas Metivier Gallery is thrilled to present a new exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Vancouver-based artist Bobbie Burgers. Notable in this exhibition is Burgers’ return to a more figurative interpretation of florals. While she does not paint from life, she has been spending more time in her own Vancouver garden and finding inspiration while observing movement and transformation as the seasons change.

We are thrilled to announce that Marie-José Gustave has joined Nicholas Metivier Gallery.

Marie-José Gustave is a Canadian artist of French-Guadeloupean origin. Born in France and living in Quebec for more than 25 years, Gustave combines hand-made pieces of porcelain with natural materials like paper thread and wood. Trained in textiles, her work bridges traditional basketry, knitting, and crochet techniques with contemporary sculpture.

Within the circular frames of her most recent body of work, Shore, the artist weaves together threads made from paper into nets. Onto these matrices, Gustave secures small porcelain rings or discs that she makes in her studio. They create a single line that loosely evokes a horizon or shoreline. Gustave’s forms are organic, echoing reeds being moved by waves and coral softened by the tide. Gustave is fascinated by artisanal techniques: basketry, textile work, pottery. Across all of these mediums, Gustave is interested in “making a repetitive gesture until I master it so that the material becomes an extension of my fingers.” Trained in clothing production in Paris, Gustave began her artistic practice in Canada opting for paper as she is drawn to its dual nature of rigidity and flexibility.

Marie-José Gustave’s work has been exhibited in Canada, France, and the US. Her work is in the collections of the Musée National des Beaux-Arts in Québec City and the Musée des Métiers D’art in Montreal. This July, Gustave’s work will be on display at the Maison Saint-Yves in Brittany, France.

“[Mackenzie] describes her process as toggling back and forth between an intellectual assessment of what is necessary and an intuitive move that responds to the effect of that assessment. She is prepared to use what she understands as her madness to take the painting to the point where she feels it is done. She thinks of a painting as a responsive thing; when she does something to one part of the surface, it “wakes up” other parts: “You’re always looking at a painting to see ‘Who’s awake? Who’s asleep?’

This is the final week to view Edward Burtynsky: The Vault Collection at Nicholas Metivier Gallery, on view through May 30th ⭐️

“Starting with the first images by Ed that I saw in the 1980s, this show tracks the past 40 years of his career. While maintaining remarkable consistency, Ed has never been trapped by subject matter: from Railcuts to Shipbreaking, from Oil to Water. All of these different subjects relate to his original idea: the impact of man on the earth. This show is a unique reminder that Burtynsky is a singular voice in the photographic world.” - Nicholas Metivier

Nicholas Metivier Gallery is excited to present ‘Spirit Messengers,’ an exhibition of new works on paper by Steven Brunelle.

Join us at the opening reception on Saturday, June 6th from 1-3PM. DM to RSVP.

‘Spirit Messengers’ weaves together Steven Brunelle’s interest in Indigenous mythologies with anecdotes drawn from his personal experiences and everyday surroundings in Lafontaine, Ontario, near Georgian Bay. Brunelle has spent his whole life in this area, having grown up only a few kilometers away from where he lives now. This long history with the area has fostered a deep connection with local wildlife that shapes his practice. Seated at the drafting table by a big window in his studio, Brunelle looks out into a garden brimming with life. Songbirds, crows, ravens, owls; a long list of birds call this place home. Brunelle’s portrayal of birds in this body of work comes out of his interest in their universal symbolism. He notes that across cultures and time birds are mythologized as messengers between our world and the spirit realm, a concept that gives the exhibition its title.

Brunelle is a descendant of the Drummond Island Metis on his father’s side, while his mother is from the Kitigan Zibi First Nation. Brunelle’s mother reconnected with her heritage later in life, dedicating herself to the traditional crafts of quill work, moose hair tufting, and beading design. Brunelle accompanied her to craft fairs, and cites it as an influence on his practice.

We’re thrilled to present ‘Lightning Running Through,’ an exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Bobbie Burgers opening Saturday, June 6th.

There will be an opening reception on Saturday, June 6th from 1-3PM. DM us to RSVP.

During the creation of this body of work, Bobbie Burgers, an avid gardener, began to think about her own work as a site of propagation, the process of creating new plants from existing ones. Burgers’ practice is one of continuous self-reference; she photographs her paintings and then makes prints of enlarged sections of them, using these as a jumping off point for her works on paper. Each print becomes the base of a new composition created with collaged elements, a direct dialogue between the original painting and the work on paper. Deepening this relationship between painted elements and paper, Bobbie often uses brushstrokes on canvas as collage pieces, or even paints directly onto the paper work. The exhibition title, ‘Lightning Running Through’ is a reference to these literal and metaphorical notions of connection throughout her practice.
