On This Day: September 4, 1912, using kerosene for fuel and equipped with solid rubber tires, a bus, believed to be the first bus in Canada, makes its maiden run today in Sydney from Charlotte Street to the Cape Breton County Exhibition grounds on Kings Road (where St. Rita Hospital used to be). The bus, constructed by local carriage builders of the firm J. A. McCallum, is a novelty, drawing large crowds. A policeman is stationed at each end of the bus to keep order, letting the first passengers get seated before others are allowed to enter. Lee Ripley, the conductor, collects 5 cents a ride from the 2,500 passengers today.

On This Day: September 2, 1713, a group of French military officers and engineers land on Cape Breton and take possession in the name of Louis XIV. They have been instructed to locate a site suitable for a fortress. Having recently signed the Treaty of Utrecht, France wants to strengthen her hold on Cape Breton, strategically important as the "key to the St. Lawrence." The engineers choose English Harbour (Louisbourg) as a site for the Fortress. During the course of their explorations, they report that Isle Royale (Cape Breton) has a population of one Frenchman and thirty Indian families.

On This Day: August 28, 1914, the 150 volunteers of the 17th Battery of Field Artillery are given a tremendous farewell as they leave for Valcartier, Quebec, before heading overseas. About 2,000 people from the Northside have come over by ferry, while thousands more have travelled by special tram service from Glace Bay. By 3 p.m. all the stores are closed, and more than ten thousand people line the streets. Flags are everywhere and the bands of Sydney, Sydney Mines, and the 94th Regiment play "Auld Lang Syne," "Our Old Canadian Home," and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again" as the troop train, decorated with bunting, leaves.

On August 26, 1725, early this morning, Le Chameau (The Camel), carrying 216 passengers and said to be the fastest ship in the French Navy, sinks off Louisbourg, after striking a reef last night. Le Chameau is on her way to Louisbourg to land the newly appointed Governor, Mesuier de Loges, son of the Governor of Montreal. Also on board are senior military and civil commanders, distinguished clergy and 82,000 livres of gold and silver from the Royal Treasury to pay the troops at Quebec.

September first, the Band plays up Bay Street to the Toronto City Hall, and on September 2, the Band wins second place at the competition at the CNE.
