The artists in RAVEL demonstrate the incredible versatility of textiles as a medium for storytelling, memory, and creative expression.

🪡 Karla Thompson explores the quiet intimacy of domestic spaces through a unique fusion of painting and embroidery. Using thread as line and texture as memory, she transforms everyday interiors into richly layered works that speak to care, routine, and the traces we leave behind. Her stitched surfaces invite viewers to slow down and consider the emotional resonance of familiar spaces.

🧶 Marion Morgan is an experienced fibre artist whose practice encompasses both 2D and 3D needle felting, as well as wet-felting techniques. Over the past eight years, she has developed a body of work focused on texture, colour, and the expressive possibilities of wool. Driven by a love of making, Marion finds joy in working with her hands to transform raw fibres into vibrant and tactile works of art.

Melt Studio & Gallery is pleased to present Immersive Journeys: Hand Hooked Land Stories, a solo exhibition by Canadian interdisciplinary artist Valerie Carew.

Opening July 2 and running until July 26 in the FORMAT Gallery Project Room, this immersive exhibition explores renewal, memory, and our connection to the Canadian landscape through hand-hooked rugs, sculpture, performance, video, and installation. Inspired by Valerie's Newfoundland and New Brunswick settler roots, the work invites viewers into dream-like journeys of transformation, wildness, and rebirth.

Over the next few weeks we'll be shining a spotlight on the diverse artists featured in our current textile exhibition, RAVEL.

🎨 Sydney Hanson explores womanhood, tradition, and inherited gender expectations through layered works that incorporate lace and found textiles. By reimagining materials historically associated with domesticity and femininity, she transforms them into powerful symbols of resilience and remembrance.

🌊 Liesa Rich creates richly tactile works inspired by childhood experiences, deafness, and a lifelong fascination with texture and sensory exploration. Through experimental materials and methods, she invites viewers into imaginative worlds that evoke wonder, comfort, and discovery.

🦉 Jill Witherspoon finds inspiration in forests, gardens, waterways, and the small creatures that inhabit them. Working in needlefelt she combines a love of colour, whimsy, and careful observation to celebrate the beauty of everyday life.

The beauty of RAVEL lies in the many ways artists use textiles to explore creativity, memory, nature, and personal expression.

🧶 Jackie Kavanagh creates vibrant handwoven works that celebrate spontaneity, joy, and sustainability. Using traditional weaving techniques and natural fibres, her abstract compositions invite viewers to discover their own meanings within the playful forms and textures.

🌿 Andrea Elmhirst transforms raw wool into large-scale felted wall sculptures inspired by the natural world. Richly textured and tactile, her work brings a sense of calm, reflection, and connection to contemporary spaces.

🌾 Jennifer Raetsen uses wool to create textured landscapes that express both the beauty of nature and the complexities of emotional experience. Her work explores the coexistence of stillness and tension, while drawing on a deep familial connection to textile-making and the meaning of home.

🌸 Elinor Rush has worked with textiles for most of her life, from managing a clothing production business to exploring quilting, dressmaking, and contemporary fibre art. Inspired by the natural beauty of her rural home north of Kingston, her work reflects a lifelong curiosity and appreciation for nature, weather, and gardens.

I am so pleased to be part of RAVEL at Melt Studio & Gallery and to be exhibiting alongside so many talented artists working in textiles in unique and imaginative ways.

My piece, Oh Dear, Deer, is inspired by the embroidered silk postcards of World War I. The postcard incorporated into this work is a reproduction of one sent by my maternal grandfather to my grandmother during his military service. Commonly known as "WWI Silks," these delicate embroidered postcards were hand-stitched on fine silk gauze by French and Belgian women and purchased by Allied servicemen to send home as tokens of affection, remembrance, and hope.

I have long been fascinated by these beautiful textile treasures from the past and the stories they carry. In this work, I combine the reproduced silk postcard with vintage doilies, repurposed upholstery strapping, painting, a rusted handle, and a functioning light element. Together, these materials speak to memory, domesticity, resilience, and the passage of time.

The title, Oh Dear, Deer, is a playful nod to both the affectionate use of the word "dear" in wartime correspondence and the imagery of the deer itself. By weaving together family history, found objects, and textile traditions, I hope to create a work that evokes tenderness, nostalgia, and a sense of connection across generations.

What Lies Beneath
An Exhibition by Pamela Tate

Melt Studio & Gallery is pleased to present What Lies Beneath, a new exhibition by Pamela Tate, on display from July 2–26, 2026.

A recent visit to Iceland prompted Tate to reflect on how both the natural world and our personal lives often conceal intricate layers beneath the surface. Just as trees communicate through vast underground networks unseen to the human eye, and Iceland's hidden geological forces reveal themselves only through volcanic eruptions, people too are complex, multi-layered beings.

In this compelling body of work, Tate explores themes of revelation, concealment, memory, and self-discovery. Through a process of laying down paint, excavating, covering, and exposing layers once again, she creates paintings that mirror the ways we uncover deeper truths about ourselves over time.

The exhibition invites viewers to consider what lies beneath appearances—within landscapes, relationships, and ourselves. It is a meditation on the hidden structures that shape our lives and the ongoing process of understanding who we are.
As Tate notes, the parallels between art and life are undeniable. What actually lies beneath might surprise you.

SHOW ANNOUNCEMENT
We are excited to announce the upcoming solo exhibition Rooted in Steel by Mona Rutenberg at Melt Studio & Gallery.

July 9 – August 2, 2026
Reception July 11th 1-4 pm with Artist Talk at 1:30 pm.

After more than thirty years as an art therapist, Mona Rutenberg discovered a passion for welding and transformed it into a full-time sculptural practice. Working with salvaged steel gathered from scrap yards, roadsides, and forgotten spaces, she creates works that explore transformation, memory, grief, industrialization, and the resilience of nature.

Deeply influenced by childhood experiences spent among industrial machinery at her father's business, Mona's sculptures carry both personal history and the stories embedded within the reclaimed materials themselves. Each piece invites viewers to consider where these objects have been, who once used them, and how time continues to reshape them.

Join us this summer as we celebrate a remarkable body of work forged from steel, memory, and imagination.

At Melt Studio & Gallery, we don't charge admission to enjoy the wonderful exhibitions that change monthly. But every now and then, visitors who have especially enjoyed their experience find their own unique way to say thank you.
Recently, a visitor surprised me with a sweet box of local strawberries from Van Grootheest Farm in Bloomfield. 🍓

I couldn't resist enjoying a few while admiring Grace Dam's painting 'You Are the Sweetest', currently on display in the Focus Gallery.
