Have you ever wanted to get behind the scenes at RCAF Station Penhold?

The Penhold Log was published locally by the base soldiers and commanding officers beginning in 1941, and chronicles the news and activities at the station. The magazine included editorials, short stories and poems, humorous cartoons, reports on social activities and sports, listings for the upcoming films at the base cinema, and later issues even included photographs. Supported by ads for local Red Deer and area businesses, we are also given a glimpse into the connections between the base and the wider community – and got an idea of where the best local spot to get a soda was!

HHAS Monday Nite at the Museum –Work continues on the Tiger Moth fuselage with installation of fabric. Good turnout of volunteers with special guest Barry Halliwell. Several years ago Barry started our Airspeed Oxford project by constructing the tail section with vertical stabilizer and rudder. It was great to catch up with him again.

HHAS spent 3 days at the Red Deer Regional Airshow. Thankyou to everyone who stopped by our display. We had a lot of interest in the Penhold Base history, the Airspeed Oxford, and and our merchandise tents. The weather was fantastic all weekend and it was a great show!

HHAS Airspeed Oxford restoration - Airspeed Oxford “Speed Limitation Plate”, donated by David Biscoe has been installed in the Oxford cockpit. This plate was collected by David’s father from his time as a pilot at Penhold Base during WW2. This weekend, our Oxford will be on display at the Red Deer Airshow (former Penhold Base), and it’s cool that this plate has made the return trip back to Penhold after 80 years, and is installed once again in an Airspeed Oxford. Be sure to stop by the Harvard Historical Aviation Society booth during the airshow to say hi and take a look at the Oxford. As well, we will have our merchandise tent set up and will also have Snowbird merchandise for sale. This will be the Snowbirds last year using their current aircraft.

HHAS Airspeed Oxford restoration - Work continues on Oxford cockpit assembly. The cockpit will be on display at the Red Deer Airshow the weekend of July 24 - 26, so be sure to stop by the HHAS booth to see the Airspeed Oxford display, and our museum merchandise. As well, we will have a good selection of Snowbirds merchandise for sale. See you there.

HHAS Airspeed Oxford Restoration – Some details of hardware attached on the Pilot side (port) cockpit sidewall. Here is the pilot compass mount and morse code key, which activates downward facing signal lights. Any input on the mounting location of the morse code key appreciated, as could not find details in the drawing of exact mounting location. We continue to search for and attach cockpit hardware as restoration progresses.
