We are thrilled to announce the placement of two early works by Norman Takeuchi into the National Gallery of Canada collection. This is the museum's first acquisition of his work. Congratulations, Norman!
Norman Takeuchi was born in Vancouver in 1937. During World War II, he and his family were among the thousands of Japanese Canadians forcibly removed from the West Coast, an experience that would have a lasting impact on his life and work.
Takeuchi studied at the Vancouver School of Art before establishing his career in Ottawa. His practice evolved from abstraction toward a deeper exploration of his Japanese Canadian identity, bringing traditional Japanese imagery into conversation with contemporary abstraction.
His work has been widely exhibited and is held in major public and corporate collections, including the TD Bank Collection, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Canadian War Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum, and the Ottawa Art Gallery.
