Since moving the museum to Main Street we’ve had a few instances of mischief, theft, and graffiti. Nothing too major, we deal with it and do what we can to minimize and protect the property and the artifacts. However, this spring we’ve had a disheartening experience. After talking to two different landscape companies, it appears that someone likely sprayed round-up through the front fence into the museum garden, killing one of the healthy, established trees and the surrounding ground cover plants.
What many people don’t realize is that many things at the museum, including this particular tree, have been generously donated by community members. The tree was given to the museum by Frances Sologuk and Osoyoos Home Hardware through a Tree Canada / Arbres Canada grant. It is sad that someone would intentionally cause harm, not only to the garden space, but to a community non-profit and in turn the volunteers and donors that support the Museum.
The tree will be replaced, the security cameras have been rearranged, and the incident reported. We aren’t the only organization or business to suffer these types of losses and unfortunately the expenses add up and take away from something else.
Keep your eyes open, be good neighbours, and speak up if you see something suspicious.
