April 1966, time for hockey playoffs. Item #2006-0090-2191, Hundreds of lads like these will be invading Midland and Penetanguishene, starting next week, as the provincial Little NHL tournament gets under way. Past-president of the Ontario Little NHL, Rev. J. L. Self of Midland is seen with a sampling of the boys who will be taking part. All from Midland, the lads are: Billy Hook, Jim Stelter, Brian Storey, Tim Merkley and Jerry Lalonde. April 6, 1966

A 1966 photo from our Free Press collection. Item #2006-0090-2190 Judges had to read the applause meter twice in order to pick these five pretty finalists in the Queen of Hearts contest Friday. In front row are Anne Delaney, Ilona Strasser and Linda Lockhart. Standing are Sheila Elliott and Lola Sharon Russell. One of them will be chosen Queen at the Odeon Theatre, Midland, this Friday. February 16, 1966 (Lola Sharon Russell from Port Severn was the winner.)

Photo #2006-0020-5007 "These three rows of box cars, parked in the CNR's Tiffin Yard, were later hooked up to make the longest grain train (more than 90 cars) ever to leave Midland. Three big diesel units (visible near the top of the picture) were used to haul the train 200 miles to Belleville. Total weight of grain in the cars was more than 7,200 tons.
