Sainte-Marie among the Hurons was the 17th century headquarters for the French Jesuit mission to the Huron. Sainte-Marie is a nationally significant historic site with twenty-five reconstructed buildings that include barracks, a church, workshops, residences and Aboriginal shelters that illustrate life in a 17th community in Upper Canada. For the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Sainte-Marie among the Hurons will offer a chance to reflect, commemorate and learn, free of charge.

At the historic site on Wednesday, September 30, observe and listen to Indigenous speakers in the spirit of education and awareness.
- attend the raising of the survivor flag
- witness a sunrise ceremony led by Troy Monague of Beausoleil First Nation
- learn about the 94 Calls to Action by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
- hear stories and voices of survivors including Marilyn Hopkins of Beausoleil First Nation and Del Taylor of Curve Lake First Nation

🤠 NEW at Sainte-Marie! Explore the story of Ontario's first European community before enjoying an unforgettable evening of country fun at Boots and Boards: Wednesday Night Line Dancing.

Before the music starts, all line dancing participants are invited to take part in a free guided tour. Led by a historical interpreter, you'll discover what daily life was like in 17th-century Wendake, learn about the gatherings and celebratory activities that once brought people together here, and connect with the rich history of Sainte-Marie.

After your optional tour, make your way to North Court and enjoy:
• One hour of beginner-friendly line dancing instruction with fan favourite Boots At The Bay!

Lunch time for Poppy 🐮

“We saved ten fowls, a pair of swine, two bulls, and the same number of cows, enough doubtless to preserve their kind.

Poppy is a descendant of the breed of cows originally raised at Sainte-Marie in the 1600s: Canadienne.

This is Canada’s original dairy cattle, yet fewer than 200 Canadiennes are registered in the country.

Cows were valued at Sainte-Marie for their manure production, helping to enrich farm soil. They would also have been used as oxen to help with chores.
