Homer Watson House & Gallery

Homer Watson House & Gallery Homer Watson House & Gallery (HWHG) is a National Historic Site and former home and art studio of Canadian artist Homer Watson.

HWHG preserves and celebrates the legacy of Homer Watson through the appreciation, enjoyment and practice of the visual arts. Homer Watson House & Gallery is the homestead of Homer Ransford Watson, Canada's first noted landscape artist (1855-1936). In 1980, his house and surrounding 3 acre property were designated under the Ontario Heritage Act as being of architectural and historic significance.

Our mission is to preserve and celebrate the legacy of Homer Watson's creative spirit by stimulating the appreciation, enjoyment and practice of the visual arts. We engage the community through curriculum-based visual arts programs, exhibitions, maintaining and displaying Watson's permanent collection, special events, and other endeavours. Today marks the 90th anniversary of Homer Watson’s passing.

His funeral was held a few days later, and it is said that at the start of the funeral procession “a great clap of thunder” was heard by mourners. A fitting tribute for an artist who loved to paint the stormy skies as much as Homer did. ⛈

Homer Watson made a massive impact on the Canadian art world, and left behind a lasting legacy.

🎊Happy Birthday, Ruthe Cayley!🎈

Ruthe and her husband Tom purchased the Homer Watson House in 1969, intent on keeping the history of the house and the Doon School of Fine Arts alive. They lived here on the grounds until Tom’s passing in 1975.

While Tom taught art classes, Ruthe led visitors on tours of the house, sharing with them the history and significance of Homer Watson. Ruthe was incredibly welcoming, offering visitors fresh coffee and homemade cookies on their arrival, and was integral to making the Homer Watson House a tourist destination. In Tom’s words, “without her I’d lose 95% of my business.”

Ruthe passed away in 2013, at the age of 85.
