Brian Markham-Limberlost Woodturning

Brian Markham-Limberlost Woodturning I create hand-crafted burl bowls, platters & live-edge furniture. Brian Markham is a woodturner inspired by the rugged forests of Muskoka.

Bark-covered burls and slabs of wood are turned on the lathe into handcrafted bowls and platters. Displaying a bowl or platter in your home reveals the warmth of wood and a connection to natural art. Brian has perfected a food-safe oil finish that enhances and protects each piece so they grace your table and display your food to perfection. Brian welcomes commissions for custom turning of your uni

que wood or burl. Visit the Artists of the Limberlost Art Show on August 19, 20 & 21, 2022 from 10-5. https://artistsofthelimberlost.ca/

We had some sales at the Algonquin Art Centre so we took some new work to the gallery. I delivered two beautiful Eucalyptus Burl Bowls and a Maple Platter with a pottery centre. It is a scenic drive and we also hiked in the park with friends.

The exhibition “Shaped By The Land” explores how Algonquin Park, through time, has been shaped by water, ice, fire, and natural processes. It is a fantastic gallery and I hope you have an opportunity to visit. Algonquin Art Centre

This Black Cherry Bowl has been purchased and will be delivered next week. It’s sure to be a well used bowl at the cottage or home. The rich red colour and figuring are beautiful for display and the bowl is finished with a durable food-safe oil to serve salads or fruit.

I’m working on a large Black Cherry Bowl that is a deep red colour with beautiful figuring. I can imagine the huge Caesar salads that will be prepared in this bowl someday.

We drove into beautiful Algonquin Park yesterday and stopped at the Algonquin Art Centre. It was wonderful to see the display of my handcrafted bowls and platters amongst the celebrated art of the region.

On view at the Algonquin Art Centre as part of the theme, Shaped by the Land (June 1–October 18, 2026), my bowls, platters and table reflect the exhibition’s exploration of how natural forces shape the landscape and, in turn, inspire artistic expression. It’s a reminder that the story of the forest continues long after the tree has fallen.

There is great satisfaction when you deliver a commission. Back in November, I was asked to make four bowls by a family who had a maple tree come down. I cut the logs, roughed out the bowls and they dried in shavings and paper bags for 6 months. I turned each of the bowls on my lathe, stabilized the edges and I sanded and perfected the finish. I was able to make some knives from the leftover wood.

The journey from tree to bowls is complete and they return to the family.

This unusual Box Elder Burl Bowl is part of my work at the Algonquin Art Centre in Algonquin Park. Box Elder or Manitoba Maple is the only North American hardwood that has natural red colouring. The live edge, red figuring and bark inclusions demonstrate the natural beauty of a burl.
