🔥 Remembering October 4, 1922 🔥

One hundred and four years ago today, the Great Fire swept across the Temiskaming District. Fanned by high winds after a long dry season, flames raced through bush, farms and settlements, from Englehart in the north to Elk Lake in the west, and across Lake Temiskaming into Quebec, reaching Notre-Dame-du-Nord and Nédélec. At the southern-most end, the fire raged through North Cobalt and then the wind changed direction and carried the fire toward the lake.

Haileybury was the hardest hit. Much of the town was reduced to ashes in a matter of hours. Families fled for their lives, with many seeking safety in Lake Temiskaming.

But what followed is just as much a part of our story. Neighbours opened their doors, communities shared what they had, and aid poured in from across the province. Together, the region rebuilt, determined to rise again.

At the Haileybury Heritage Museum, we are proud to help keep those stories alive: the memories, the photographs and the resilience of the families who lived through it. Many of us carry a piece of that history in our own family stories.

Deepest condolences to Hans' family - may he rest in peace.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Hans E. Schnakenberg, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother-in-law, and friend, on September 25, 2026, at the age of 69.

Hans was proud to say that he was born in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, on December 30, 1956. A few years ago, he was able to return and revisit the beautiful university town that always held a special place in his heart.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 48 years, Christine (Plaunt); his daughters, Jessica (Nathan) and Jennifer (Chris); and his cherished grandchildren, Harlyn, Finnian, Ellie, and Rowan. His grandchildren were a constant source of joy and were truly among the reasons he fought so courageously for as long as he did. One of his final delights was enjoying Popsicles with them, creating one more treasured memory.

Hans was predeceased by his son, Mark; his mother, Ruth (née Little); and his stepfather, Duncan Gray.

Sports played an important role throughout Hans's life. He enjoyed baseball and volleyball well into adulthood, and some of his fondest memories were made playing beach volleyball alongside a group of fun-loving friends.

Over the years, Hans held a variety of jobs, including shipper-receiver and security guard, but he ultimately found his true calling as an electrician. He thrived on the challenges of mathematics and problem-solving that the trade offered. As one of his coworkers fondly recalled, when Hans believed there was a right way to do a job, that was the way it would be done, with care, pride, and no shortcuts. He also shared his love of carpentry with his children and later turned his talents to woodworking, crafting treasured sleighs for his grandchildren.

Family camping vacations were among Hans's happiest adventures. Whether in a tent, a tent trailer, or a traditional camper, the destination mattered far less than the opportunity to spend time with family and friends. Those trips created countless memories that will be cherished for years to come.

A Celebration of Life was held at the Haileybury Heritage Museum, a place that was close to Hans's heart. In memory of Hans, donations may be made to the Haileybury Heritage Museum.

The family would like to thank everyone for their kindness, support, and expressions of sympathy during this difficult time.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Glenys Lathem.

Glenys was a steadfast supporter of the Haileybury Heritage Museum and our work to preserve and share our community's history. Her encouragement and support were deeply appreciated by our volunteers and board.

We extend our sincere condolences to Glenys’s family and friends. She will be remembered with gratitude and affection by all of us at the museum.

Little Paws Cat Cafe has made an incredible contribution to Temiskaming Shores - They certainly are a great addition to the business scene in downtown Haileybury - delicious treats, coffees and teas for takeout or eat in. But that's the bonus part. The real work is supporting the homeless cats and kittens, and agencies from Timmins to North Bay and right across into Quebec, giving foster organizations a partner who actually shows up for them.

And today we get to celebrate something truly special: Little Paws has just welcomed their 100TH ADOPTION! 🐾🎉 That's 100 cats and kittens who now have warm laps, full bellies, and forever homes - and they hit this milestone WELL ahead of their own goal, which was their one-year anniversary this coming November. That's not luck, that's heart, dedication, and countless hours of love poured into every single one of those animals.

Little Paws is also one of those wonderful Haileybury businesses that shows up for our community in other ways too - including their support of the Haileybury Heritage Museum. We're so grateful for local businesses like them who understand that a strong community means supporting each other.

So here's to the incredible humans behind Little Paws Cat Cafe - thank you for building something so good, so generous, and so genuinely needed in Haileybury. Here's to the next 100!

Pork Chop is officially adoption #100!!

When we opened in late November last year our goal was to get 100 cats adopted in the first year. The summer was really slow for adoptions everywhere and we were somewhat concerned but the applications have started coming in again and we're so happy we reached our goal over two months early.

A huge thanks to all of our customers and followers for all of your continued love and support. We love what we do and we're so happy for each and every cat who has gone on to their forever home.❤️

For now, we're going to hang out in the cat room and look at the photos on the wall and maybe shed a few tears.🥲
