𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟵, 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟮 — 𝗗𝗶𝗲𝗽𝗽𝗲

Today marks the 84th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, one of the most tragic days in Canadian military history.

On August 19, 1942, about 6,100 Allied troops landed at the German-occupied French port of Dieppe. Roughly 5,000 were Canadian. The raid went terribly wrong. More than 900 Canadians were killed and almost 2,000 were taken prisoner.

Dieppe was a devastating loss, but it also exposed lessons that would later influence the planning of the successful Allied invasion of Europe.

And here is the part of the story that may surprise you:

𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗲𝘆𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘆.

Major Reginald “Reggie” Unwin had lived here since 1924. He was an organist and music teacher, a founding member of Rotary, a supporter of the public library, a choir director, chess player and stamp collector—and the host of legendary gatherings at his camp, in Temagami.

He was also a military intelligence officer.

Before Dieppe, Unwin and fellow intelligence officer Captain Ernest Magnus studied the German defences and warned that they were extremely strong, particularly around the beaches and cliffs. Their concerns were not fully accepted.

After the disastrous raid, an intelligence assessment was prepared outlining the weaknesses in the planning and the failure to heed warnings about the German defences.

A copy of that report, marked 𝗦𝗘𝗖𝗥𝗘𝗧 and dated August 20, 1942—just one day after the raid—was found among Unwin’s personal papers.

We cannot say that Unwin wrote the report. But its conclusions closely echo the concerns he had raised before the attack.

It is an extraordinary connection: a man remembered in Haileybury for music, community service, and friendship was also one of the intelligence officers trying to warn his superiors about what awaited Canadian soldiers at Dieppe.

Researching is a labour of love. Sometimes, there are postscripts that add icing to the research cake. Today, we share a delightful "PS" to the Reg Unwin story, the subject of the main article in our newsletter.

When Sarah Rowlands first contacted us about her uncle, Reginald “Reggie” Unwin, we set off to uncover the story of a remarkable Haileyburian who had been forgotten.

Just when we thought the story was finished, Sarah has discovered one more extraordinary connection.

The current owner of Unwin's Temagami camp, "Pine Arcadia" was born in 1953 — the same year Reggie died.

But that's not the strange part.

He says he was born on the very same day that Reggie died 😳.

Sarah put it perfectly: “It was written in the stars!”

We've all heard of six degrees of separation. This feels like next-level Temiskaming!

Sometimes the past isn't nearly as far away as we think. And sometimes, apparently, it shares your birthday. Plsu, there's icing on the cake! 😉🎂🍰
