Cottage Country: A Year in Colour — Opening September 13

Celebrate the beauty, colour and creativity of cottage country at the Muskoka Discovery Centre!

Join us for the Grand Opening of Cottage Country: A Year in Colour on Sunday, September 13 from 2:00–5:00 PM.

This colourful new exhibition brings together the work of three talented artists each offering their own creative interpretation of the landscapes, seasons and spirit that make cottage country so special.

Come meet the artists, explore the exhibition and enjoy an afternoon of art at the MDC.

As the final date in our summer series, T.A.L.L host their first live T.A.L.L lecture at the Muskoka Discovery Centre!

Talk Summary: Literacy in education has long centered on reading, writing, and mathematics — but what about reading the world itself? Maps, place, and geographic knowledge offer students a powerful lens for understanding culture, politics, and the forces that shape our lives. This presentation explores how educators can foster critical geographic literacy with learners of all ages. *Refreshments and Question & Answer session included!

Bio:
Dr. Gary Pluim is an Associate Professor of Social Foundations and Intercultural Education in the Faculty of Education at Lakehead University, Orillia, holding a PhD from OISE, University of Toronto. His scholarship examines place-based and global citizenship education, youth voice, and alternative pedagogies, with current research exploring the intercultural dimensions of curriculum-sharing among Commonwealth nations. His work appears in journals including Intercultural Education and Comparative and International Education and is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. A 2024 recipient of the Lakehead University Contribution to Teaching Award, Gary previously held educational leadership roles across the Pacific, East Africa, the Canadian Arctic, and the Caribbean.

Meet Maurice Richard on and off the ice, and follow his spectacular career with the Montreal Canadiens—from the early ‘40s, when only a few thousand people turned out for pro hockey games, to the 1950s, when the Montreal Forum was bursting with delirious fans. Clarence Campbell, former president of the NHL, describes him as “the most exciting player I have ever seen in my life.” The Rocket features footage from games and revealing interviews with Richard himself, the first star of the golden age of hockey.

This feature-length documentary tells the story of jockey Ron Turcotte, who, along with his legendary horse Secretariat, won the prestigious American Triple Crown in 1973. Follow along as we witness Turcotte’s rise to fame, the fall in 1978 that left him a paraplegic and his emotional journey back to the people and places that marked his life. This is a road movie that delves deep into the thrilling and dangerous world of horseracing, featuring never-before-seen footage of Secretariat and appearances by Triple Crown winners Steve Cauthen and Jean Cruguet.
