Fernie Mine Rescue station, ca. 1940s. The station sat at the junction of the MF&M railway and the CPR, now the corner of Cokato and Coal Creek roads. Photo donated by Stephen Dunfield.

From the 1912 Coal Mine Inspector's report for the South East Kootenay:
"During this past year the Government erected a permanent Mine-rescue Station at Fernie, which has all the necessary facilities and appliances for training persons in the use of the rescue apparatus for mine-rescue work. (...) I regret to state that the number of fatal accidents in and about the mines was large; most of the accidents are attributed to falls of coal or rock and to haulage, some occurring under very peculiar circumstances."

Installing water pipes, the Annex, August 1909.
In the early years of the 20th century unclean drinking water was connected to several outbreaks of typhoid in Fernie and area. In 1908 the City moved the water source to spring-fed Fairy Creek, and constructed a pipe across the Elk River to carry water to the population.
