REMINDER: Workshop this Thursday

Gleaning the Blue-Green: Field Lab
Thursday, October 22, 6 - 8 p.m.
Room 11-460, 4th Floor, Allard Hall
Free registration required - link in bio!

Gleaning the Blue-Green: Field Lab is a 2-hour participatory workshop considering dataset-making as a creative and relational practice. Building from the exhibition Gleaning the Blue-Green, the workshop explores how creatives can build personal or conceptual image ecologies from the places, materials, phenomena, and visual traces that shape their attention.

Through short talks, discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, participants will develop an image ecology drawn from personal interests, local environments, everyday observations, or ongoing research.

The workshop will also introduce accessible open-source tools for organizing and extending these image collections into generative processes. Rather than beginning with the machine, the workshop begins with attention: What do we repeatedly notice? What do we overlook? What relationships become visible when images are gathered over time?

Participants will leave with the beginnings of a personal image ecology and a framework for slower, localized, and less extractive approaches to generative AI.

No previous experience with coding or AI is required. Seats are limited. This event is free and all are welcome.

Note: You are encouraged to bring a laptop or similar device to follow along.

Mitchell Art Gallery will be OPEN on Saturday, October 10 for regular hours. Come visit our current exhibition Kelly Andres: Gleaning the Blue-Green, from 12 - 5 p.m.

In Gleaning the Blue-Green, Kelly Andres experiments with the ways we seek understanding about the living systems of plants and animals around us. Drawing from her own efforts to learn about an important ecosystem close to her rural home east of Edmonton – the wetland – the artist’s creative fodder is the methods often used in scientific study.

Noticing, Tending, Eating: A water lentil tasting in three parts
with artist Kelly Andres
and chef Rylan Krause

November 19, 6 - 8 p.m.
At The Kitchen, Stanley A. Milner Public Library.
Registration: https://mitchellartgallery.macewan.ca/events/noticing-tending-eating

Join artist Kelly Andres for a participatory tasting and conversation in collaboration with chef Rylan Krause, developed as part of Andres’s solo exhibition, Gleaning the Blue-Green, at the Mitchell Art Gallery.

The event invites participants to consider how attention, care, and creative transformation can shift what feels edible, familiar, or possible through experiments in observation, tending, preparing, and speculative tasting.

Chef Rylan Krause’s culinary offerings using water lentils and other often overlooked ingredients open space to think about tasting as a process of discovery as Andres’ creative prompts illuminate tender and thoughtful methods for encountering the unfamiliar.

This program is conducted in partnership with the Edmonton Public Library.

Stay tuned for details about free online registration!

When: Every Wednesday 12 - 4 p.m., September 23 - December 2
Where: Mitchell Art Gallery, Allard Hall Main Atrium
Free art-making drop-in

What is Art Buffet?

The Art Buffet is the Mitchell Art Gallery’s own “art hive”, a concept developed over two decades of research by Dr. Janis Timm-Bottos rooted in ideas of art therapy and inclusivity. Every Wednesday, we gather and invite the community to join us in self-directed, no-pressure art-making, where we provide the materials and the encouragement!

The Art Buffet is free, materials are provided, and no prior art experience is necessary. Share in dialogue, art-making, and skill-sharing between people of different backgrounds, ages, cultures, and abilities. A buffet of art materials awaits!

Here's a peek behind the scenes as we install Gleaning the Blue-Green! Please join us this Thursday, September 17 for an opening reception and see these works in action. The reception runs from 6 - 8 p.m. and is free and open to all.

In Gleaning the Blue-Green, Kelly Andres
experiments with the ways we seek understanding about the living systems of plants and animals around us. Drawing from her own efforts to learn about an important ecosystem close to her rural home east of Edmonton – the wetland – the artist’s creative fodder is the methods often used in scientific study. Andres has created this series of sculpture, video, photography, and performance from gathering and growing water lentils and spirulina, collecting water samples, and building datasets. Rather than generating data intended for analysis and supporting empirical knowledge, Andres instead uses these artistic interpretations of scientific methods to ask important questions about how and what is knowable – what it is that we can glean – about living systems. The ongoing maintenance of the plants in the gallery is a performance of care between the artist and her living subjects. Andres’ investment in relational care opens space for us to consider what might be required of such relationships as our climate continues shifting.

Can't make it to the opening? Visit us Tuesdays to Saturdays, 12 - 5 p.m. and Thursdays 12 - 7 p.m., starting September 18th. Admission is free and all are welcome.
