Currently in the atrium of City Hall are displayed copies of the original hand-colored Tectonic Lithofacies Map of the Appalachian Orogen by Harold “Hank” Williams & Jim Hibbard, 1976 and the official printed map from 1978. The map(s) document the Appalachian mountain chain from Alabama to Newfoundland, representing its evolution through plate tectonics. It defines five zones – the Humber, Dunnage, Gander, Avalon, and the Meguma – that illustrate the opening and closing of the Iapetus Ocean and the addition of continental fragments to eastern North America.
