90 years ago, the Sand Merchant was lost in a powerful storm on Lake Erie on October 17th, 1936. 19 of the 26 crew members lost their lives in the wreck after the ship was overturned in heavy winds.

Built at the Collingwood Shipyards in 1927, Hull 79, Sand Merchant was designed as sand sucker and operated mainly on Lake Erie. Owned by the Interlake Transit Company and later National Sand and Materials of Toronto, the ship returned to Collingwood in 1930 to be rebuilt as a self-unloader and continued service until its demise.

Join Dean Hollin for this year's Haunted Walking Tours and uncover the eerie tales and ghostly secrets of Collingwood’s haunted past.

All tours begin at 7:00 p.m. and feature a 2 km walking loop, lasting approximately 1.5 hours. Tours run Friday, October 23, Thursday, October 29, and Friday, October 30.

October is 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐡 and at the Collingwood Museum, we’re taking this opportunity to highlight the lives of Collingwood women who were storytellers, journalists, poets and more, whose words helped shape our community, our country, and the world beyond with the stroke of a pen.

Today we are highlighting the internationally recognized poet, 𝐄𝐝𝐧𝐚 𝐉𝐚𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬, who was born in Collingwood in 1891 in a house on Birch Street. Edna spent her early childhood in Collingwood until 1902 when her family moved to Saskatchewan. A self-taught poet, Edna published her first poem at 13 and gained international fame during the First World War with her poem “In Flanders Now”.

Currently on display at the Museum are books of Edna’s poetry graciously loaned by the Collingwood Public Library, alongside baby bonnets worn by Edna Jaques and her twin sister, Erie Linton, who tragically passed away at just 6 weeks old. The bonnets are part of the Museum’s collection.

In the fall of 1871, Collingwood’s new grain elevator, built by the Northern Railway Company, officially began operations with its first cargo shipment. Arriving from Chicago, the schooner Potomac unloaded 16,000 bushels of corn into the elevator which had a capacity of 165,000 bushels. Built over open water, the wooden structure was a significant engineering achievement and, at the time, the largest grain elevator on the Great Lakes.

This photograph, taken around 1890, shows the bustling activity that followed the elevator's opening. Much like this photograph, it was not uncommon to see numerous schooners waiting their turn to unload at the elevator. The largest cargo delivered by a sailing vessel was an impressive 44,475 bushels of corn carried by the schooner Porter.

As growing demand in grain transport continued, a larger concrete grain elevator was built in 1929 which still stands today. The two elevators stood side by side in the harbour until the wooden elevator was taken down in 1937. For decades it was the centre of a thriving transportation network, helping fuel the economic growth that shaped Collingwood’s future.

The Collingwood Museum’s newest Community Collectors exhibit, 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐏𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞: 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐰𝐨𝐨𝐝, celebrates the women writers, poets, and storytellers who called Collingwood home. Explore the remarkable stories, creative voices, and lasting legacies of women whose words helped shape our community, our country, and the world beyond.

The exhibit opens on Tuesday, October 13, but there’s a special opportunity to get a sneak peek this weekend! Stop by the Museum on Saturday, October 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to catch a first glimpse of the new exhibit while the finishing touches are underway.

For more than 120 years, Collingwood citizens have been preserving and celebrating the story of our community including the history of Collingwood’s largest industry, the Collingwood Shipyards.

Since the establishment of the Collingwood Museum’s predecessor, the Huron Institute, generations of local residents have collected stories, saved artifacts, documented memories, and helped ensure that Collingwood’s shipbuilding legacy would not be forgotten.
