How to attach solid wood casket handles without the use of metal fasteners

Nearly every day I get emails from overseas factories wanting me to import their caskets, urns, and keepsakes. My answer is always no.

Death is one of the most personal, tender moments a family will ever face. It deserves to be honoured with care, love, and even a little joy for the life that was lived. Not mass-produced for profit.

In this video I share why I'll keep building every casket by hand. ❤️

Keep it square, keep it strong. 🪵

In this 15-second clip, I show you how to assemble the base components of our eco-friendly casket kit without breaking a thing. The secret is keeping everything square as you go. Get the base right and the rest of the build falls into place.

Building a casket yourself is a meaningful way to care for someone you love, and we're honored to be part of that.

There’s a moment in every build where two pieces of pine either come together clean, or they don’t. No in-between. No “close enough.”

This is that moment. Lid glue-up, corner alignment, the whole thing riding on whether I measured right three steps ago.

Twenty-nine years into this and it still gets my heart rate up a little. Darn thing never gets old.

This is what a Coffinbuilder plan actually walks you through — not just cut lists, but the moments where it matters most. Comment PLANS and I’ll send you the details.

I took this custom Coffin Pool Table to the Pl***oy Mansion.

We left the West Kootenays with the pool table riding in a cargo trailer behind my Durango — me, Pat, and my friend Katie. Three days to make it to the Pl***oy Mansion, tickets already booked, friends already flying in. Then the first border crossing turned us away — not a commercial entry point, and we had no paperwork for the table. No broker, no documentation, nothing.

I didn’t tell Pat and Katie how bad the odds were. I just turned the truck around and drove four hours out of our way to Osoyoos, a commercial crossing, still with nothing in hand to explain a casket-shaped pool table riding in a trailer. When we pulled up, the customs agents didn’t reach for a rejection stamp — they reached for their phones. They wanted photos of it. Somehow, by the grace of God, they waved us through.

Only once we were clear did I tell Pat and Katie how close we’d come to not making it at all. They were more relieved I hadn’t told them sooner.
